About Hilary

Dear All:

Let me tell you a little about myself so you can see if my qualifications will work for you. My name is Hilary. I majored in English at Vassar College and obtained my MFA in Poetry from Warren Wilson College.

I love teaching and have years of experience working with students of all ages, both as a classroom teacher and as a private tutor. I have extensive experience teaching test prep—GED, SSAT, ACT, SAT, PSAT, and GRE. I have worked with many kinds of test prep books and have come to believe that the same three things are always important for test prep: work, practice, and fun. Any student who comes ready for all three is a student whose score I can help raise!

I have tutored in school subjects as well, such as early- to mid-level science, history, math, and Spanish, as well as phonics, reading, spelling, vocabulary, and all levels of writing. I also believe in the importance of proper studying for maximum learning, so part of what I do when I tutor is figure out how each student currently studies, show her ways to improve, and then tweak how she works as time goes on so she can study well on her own.

I am open to working with students for only a few sessions or for over a year. Either way, I hope we are a good fit and I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught K-6th for the Institute of Reading Development, and I tutored the same age group privately, for Score!, and for Learning Abled. Thus I have experience tutoring K-6th in reading comprehension, writing, phonics, and math, with additional experience working with students with ADD and ADHD. I believe treating my students like people no matter their age, which means discussing their education, lessons, and concerns with their parents and well them every step of the way. I find such inclusiveness helps my students be on board for their education, making them more excited about learning and more able to learn what they need to, too.

Study Skills

I am qualified to tutor students in study skills because I have always been a good studier, as evidenced by my academic history. For example, in my many years in school, I learned that studying begins in the classroom: a student must know how to take notes, listen, and process the information from the get-go, i.e., not weeks later before the exam or paper. I tutored for many years, and I always began teaching my students how to take notes, the importance of outlines and flashcards, and the necessity of a slow acquisition of info, as opposed to the cramming-in one often attempts at the last minute. The bottom line is that study skills are tools a person will use for the rest of her life, not just for the next final exam.
