My work with children began in high school, when I tutored elementary students and volunteered as a Big Brothers and Big Sisters Mentor. During college, I worked as an America Reads tutor in a 2nd grade classroom. I also tutored and led study groups for other undergraduates in Biology, Chemistry, and Math. In addition, I worked with children and families at a local zoo and animal sanctuary, providing formal and informal presentations about native animals. After college, I moved to Chicago and began pursuing my teaching certification. While back in school, I worked full-time as a nanny. In my spare time, I volunteer as a tutor to a high school student and as a writing coach for 4th-12th graders.
In 2007, I got my B.S. in Biology from the University of Wisconsin – Green Bay. In 2011, I obtained my K-9 teaching certification. While pursuing my certification, I have observed, assisted, and taught in all grade levels kindergarten through eighth.
My educational philosophy:
I believe that students learn best when they are engaged and motivated. I do my best to help students learn content and skills through the use of fun, hands-on activities that connect learning to their real-life experiences. In everything we do, I include skills that will transfer to other areas of the student’s schooling and life: problem-solving, critical thinking, time management, etc. My work with children began in high school, when I tutored elementary students and volunteered as a Big Brothers and Big Sisters Mentor. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a Type 03 (K-9) certified teacher in Illinois. I completed my clinicals in a Kindergarten classroom, student taught in a 2nd grade classroom, and have worked in varying capacities in every grade level K-8. I have taught 1st grade in Chicago Public Schools for several years.
I have a K-9 teaching certificate and have taught in Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade classrooms. I spent several years teaching 1st, which is heavily focused on phonics, basic grammar, and learning to read. I use many hands-on phonics activities that I have developed and made. Students entered my classroom with limited or no reading ability and left as confident, independent readers.
I am a Type 03 (K-9) certified teacher in Illinois. Although not required to take the Praxis for certification, I recently took the Praxis test and received a score of 193, for which I received the Praxis Recognition of Excellence Award.
In addition, I scored high on all of the Illinois tests I was required to take for certification: a 297 on the Illinois Basic Skills Test (similar to the Praxis I), a 288 on the Content Area Exam (similar to the Praxis II: Elem Ed Content Knowledge), and a 288 on the APT (similar to the Praxis II: Elem Ed Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment).
I can provide proof of these scores if needed.

I completed my clinicals in a Kindergarten classroom, student taught in a 2nd grade classroom, and taught 1st grade in Chicago Public Schools for several years. My extensive experience in K-2 means that I have focused much of my time and energy on helping young students with phonics and learning to read.
