My training was in theater, and I grew to love the sound of English- and love to hear it spoken or written correctly! My name is Bernie and I'm ready to start my thirtieth year of teaching. I taught English for eleven years and can help your 6th to 12th grader with grammar, vocabulary, writing and literature. I was also an indexer and a proofreader at Encyclopaedia Britannica for two years, and would be more than happy to proofread for you. And if anyone needs help with public speaking or acting, I'm your man! (Pardon my starting a sentence with a conjunction. I did that for effect.)

Vocabulary

Learning definition and proper use of words, using context and etymology. Student can be questioned orally and in writing, going beyond rote learning.

Grammar

Help with all aspects of grammar, including parts of speech identification, parts of sentence identification, subject/verb agreement, use of phrases and clauses, etc.

Reading

I offer help in comprehension of subject matter, including work with phonics.

Writing

Help is offered in composition, including expository, persuasive, proposition support, and other kinds of writing. Help can be given in composing such forms as essays and resumes as well.

English

Help with all aspects of what is covered in English classes 6-12, including preparation for ACT and SAT testing.

Literature

Help with interpretation of literature, including short stories, plays, novels, poetry, etc.

Proofreading

I can proofread any type of writing, looking for (and suggesting alternatives for) errors in grammar, capitalization, word usage, etc.

Theatre

Having two theater degrees and lots of experience in community theater I am excited and qualified to work with the rehearsal and performance of theatrical pieces: scene work for acting class, rehearsing scenes for competition, relaxation techniques, voice and body work...even mime! (Work with adult performers is something I would whole-heartedly welcome as well.)

Public Speaking

My experience in teaching public speaking began near the end of my college career when I wrote a paper on debate, which was needed to be certified as a teacher. I taught speech classes (Personal Speech, Speech I, and Communication Skills) at Marian Catholic High School for about twenty-five years, and spent several years as a coach/judge for our Speech Team.
