Special Education/Elementary Tutor: Reading, Math, Functional

Hello, I have just finished graduate school and moved to Illinois to begin working in special education. I have extensive background in students with behavioral and academic problems and enjoy working on basic academic behavior skills as well as specific academic tasks (especially reading and math). I am happy to help at home with work on IEP goals and help parents weed through and prioritize goals and objectives to work with their child on. Additionally, I have extensive experience working on academic skills/behaviors for children with autism as well as children who have issues stemming from attachment disorders (possibly due to a later adoption). A significant portion of my graduate work dealt with autism and attachment disorders. I also have experience with developmental dyslexia and specific learning disabilities in math and reading.

Vocabulary

I have worked with students, particularly students with receptive language issues, in developing vocabulary with blended literacy and explicit instruction.

Grammar

I have a strong background working with students with writing and composition skills at an elementary and middle school level. I have worked hard with my past students to develop good writing habits and methods of structuring their writing ideas.

Reading

I have taught reading to a variety of students with a variety of needs from gifted readers to readers that have profound dyslexia. I used a varied interest based approach and try to make reading fun... or at least enjoyable.

Elementary Math

I have taught elementary level math from basic arithmetic through pre-algebra. I also work hard to adapt math and make it understandable for students who struggle with math.

Elementary Science

I taught elementary science as and have used FOSS as well as self contracted science lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have an Illinois elementary teaching license with LBS 1 certification.

Phonics

As part of my teaching preparation, I taught direct instruction phonics (using SRA and my own prompts) to students to help them with reading and spelling.

I have an extensive background in special education helping students with functional academic skills such as study skills.

I have a master's degree in special education and am a licensed special education teacher in 2 states.

ADD/ADHD

I have course work in abnormal psychology, special education, as well as an LBS (learning and behavioral teaching license).

My master's thesis dealt with asperger's syndrome/autism. Resultantly, I have a strong research as well as academic background with Asperger's syndrome/autism.
