"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." For fifteen years - whether in the classroom, with homeschoolers or in private tutoring sessions - I have applied the principles in this fantastic quote by William Butler Yeats. I am a vivacious, positive and intuitive teacher who desires to light a spark of enthusiasm for learning in my students. I love seeing students strive for, achieve and even surpass their own goals. As head of the English department of Christian Liberty Academy, I taught all levels of English in the high school and middle school, including AP English Literature and Composition which I continue to teach to homeschooled students. Students find my writing and editing tips and comprehension help extremely beneficial. I love tutoring students who want to learn, continue and master the English language as a second language.
I have tutored ESL for five years and currently tutor students from Germany, China, Japan, Venezuela and Guatemala. A Classics major (St. Olaf College), I developed and taught a multi-level Latin program for twelve years. I continue to love this amazing language and its many uses and benefits in our lives today --- English vocabulary, medical, scientific and legal terminology. I currently teach Latin online and in the classroom at a classical school for homeschooled students (Classical Consortium).
I look forward to helping students understand, identify and employ a variety of learning styles, particularly those that seem to 'fit' their individual needs and personalities. We all learn in a unique way and at a unique pace. With warmth and enthusiasm, I desire to help students discover and utilize their gifts and while achieving success in lighting that fire!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
For the past fifteen years I have been dedicated to helping students write with clarity and concision. I enjoy the revision process and helping students find their 'voice' as they compose essays. I have taught high school English (all levels 9-12, AP English Literature and Composition, AP English Language) and have been tutoring privately for the past three years. I help high school juniors and seniors with the college application process, including essay writing. I also help them prepare for ACT/SAT exams - Reading, English and Writing portions. At St. Olaf College I earned a BA in Classics (Latin/Greek) with a minor in English Literature. I am an enthusiastic, energetic and highly effective tutor who loves to inspire and motivate students!
I have been tutoring ESL/ESOL for the past eight years and I love it! I am a patient, positive and energetic teacher. I love the English language and I love helping others to communicate in English more clearly - whether by improving their speaking, reading, writing or comprehension skills. I am quick to aid pronunciation and I truly enjoy seeing my students flourish!
