Dear Learners:
My name is Alejandra D. Do not be scared by my name, I speak English as a first language! I am currently a stay at home mom, living in Ottawa, and I am looking to work part time while raising my daughter.
Work Experience: I have over a decade of experience working as a tutor, educator, and social worker. Specifically, I have worked as a Head Start teacher (1 yr), an elementary school assistant teacher and tutor at two Chicago Public schools (3 yrs), and teaching GED preparation and computer basics to adults (3 yrs). In these positions I have taught students in small groups and individually. I have additional experience teaching employment and life skills to teens living with autism and to adults living with severe chronic mental illness. In short, I have come to use a wide variety of teaching techniques in order to connect with a diversity of learners. I generally believe in goal-oriented education, keeping in mind that the student's goal is usually to pass a specific class, and so must be taught to the standards and methods of the class. That said, I have also worked with youth and adults with very open goals, such a becoming a better reader and learning to write creatively.
Academic Background: I have a BA from the University of Chicago (3.7 GPA), which means that I come from a rigorous academic background with a strong emphasis on critical thinking and writing. I also have a Master degree from the University of Illinois in Chicago (4.0 GPA).
Thank you for considering my services.
