My name is Corey P., as a graduate of Illinois State University, I have five years of private tutoring experience. I also am a high school Earth Science teacher at Oswego East High School. I have extensive tutoring experience in several subjects and all grade levels including: writing, reading, all sciences, pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, and all social sciences. I, also, have extensive experience tutoring ACT prep, TAP (formerly the Basic Skills Test), and PSAT. At Illinois State I graduated with a degree in Earth and Space Science Education. I graduated with a 3.65 cumulative GPA and Cum Laude Honors. Among my other passions include reading, writing, and running. My writing, reading, and science experience has allowed me to tutor a wide range of students. My tutoring philosophy is straightforward and to the point. I put students in the best positions to learn. I really focus on simplifying material and putting into terms where the student can understand. I strive to get my students to understand what they are learning, rather than memorizing it. I help students relate material to their lives using real world examples and experiences from their life. I encourage my students to ask why and question the world around them. I constantly ask my students, "Why is this important to you? Why are we even learning about this?" This allows them to see the application to their life and why certain subject matter is important to learn. If a student wants to be great in math, I focus on improving their basic math skills. If a student wants to be a great writer, I show them that they need to be a great reader first. If a student wants to be great in science, I show them that they have to be a great observer. Most importantly, I make tutoring fun. My students learn to appreciate and enjoy the learning process. My ultimate goal for my students is for them to walk away from tutoring sessions with a passion for learning and growing into a lifelong learner. Finally, I don't view myself as just a tutor. I view myself as a mentor and role model for my students. I strive to be someone that my students can count on to be there for them when they are struggling. If I can accomplish that then I have done my job.
