ACT English

I have a bachelor's degree in English and the rhetorical arts and had a 3.4 major GPA when I graduated. I still edit and read every day. I am a member of Chicago Women in Publishing and freelance edit as well.

ACT Reading

My first method for tutoring ACT Reading skills is to use the teacher manual. After we KNOW The correct answer, we work backwards to find out why the other answers are wrong. This method decreases frustration.

My second method is time management. Many issues come from stress when it comes to time management. Every two minutes or so, I interrupt the student's reading and say, "That's two minutes, just breathe." By saying the same thing, it creates a trigger word that decreases stress. Hopefully, when I'm not physically there and the student feels stressed, they will hear my voice saying, "just breathe" and they will relax.

My third method is to determine a students vocabulary. I have the student read the practice passage and circle any words they don't know, can't pronounce or just don't make sense. Then I show the student how to "play detective" and find clues for what the meaning could be.

English

I majored in English and the Rhetorical Arts and had a 3.4 major GPA when I graduated. I still read and edit every day. I am a member of Chicago Women in Publishing and freelance edit as well.

Grammar

One of the classes I took for my English degree was specifically on grammar, and I know how to graph a sentence as well as each part of speech. I currently tutor grammar and have seen improvement with my students.

Literature

For my bachelor's degree in English and the Rhetorical Arts, I took several literature classes and received As in every single one.

Proofreading

I have edited three novel manuscripts, numerous newspaper articles, endless papers of peers, and I edit every day. I am a member of Chicago Women in Publishing and discuss grammar, writing, and editing on a daily basis.

Public Speaking

In high school and college I took public speaking courses and I received an A on every single speech. I was briefly on the speech team in high school as well. I have bachelor's degree in English and have given presentations all of my life with great success.

Reading

I majored in English and the Rhetorical Arts. I read constantly and I edit every day. I am a member of Chicago Women in Publishing and freelance edit as well. I know how tutor reading out loud and how to help students read silently to themselves.

SAT Reading

I am currently tutoring two students in ACT reading and they are both showing insanely good improvement. I would use the same methods and apply them to the SAT test-taking style.

SAT Writing

I tutored my peers' writing in college and took a class on how to tutor. After viewing a sample of writing, I can efficiently pinpoint areas that need improvement.

Study Skills

I tutored my peers in college through a tutoring class and I have actually been teaching study skills already, without even realizing it. I also help my younger siblings with their homework (since junior high and they are in college now).
My current students are showing definite progress. I just now noticed I wasn't actually certified by WyzAnt.

Vocabulary

I read every single day and I have Merriam Webster as my home page. I look at the Word of the Day every single day. I have several vocabulary builder books and reference them. Every word has a specific nuance. I have learned that drawing a picture in connection with the word helps memorize definitions.

Writing

My process for tutoring writing is to determine what stage the writing is in--if the writing is started or if we need to brainstorm. I ask important questions such as "Who is the intended audience?" and "Is there a prompt or theme?"

After those things are determined, we can work on organization and order of thoughts. Grammar and spelling would be the finishing touches.

I would also point out positive things as I found them in the paper, such as good description or a clever point. Staying positive is always important.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
