I have extensive teaching experience including eight years of elementary classroom teaching. Also, my experience includes seven years of teaching English as a Second Language to adults, three years of teaching English Language Learners in an elementary district, and tutoring both adults and children in reading, language arts, math grades 1-4, and English as a Second Language.

I do a thorough assessment of each learner to develop individualized goals and plans for each student. With proper identification of skills that need work, I am able to employ specific reading strategies and best practices. Differentiation and scaffolding are integral parts of the tutoring. Throughout the process, there is ongoing progress monitoring. Thus, the student is able to grow in ability as well as self confidence in as short a period of time as possible. Of course, positive reinforcement is extensively used. Also, communication with the parent of the student is important in the process.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is part of Language Arts, which is my strong suit. Vocabulary should be learned in context. Before reading a selection, a student should be familiar with the new vocabulary words. Then, games and/or worksheets can be used to reinforce the new vocabulary words.

Grammar

I have extensive experience teaching language arts at the elementary level. I have also taught English as a Second Language to elementary and adult students. In addition, I have tutored grammar successfully to both children and adults.

I employ best practices and use creative techniques. Some of these include games, phonics interventions such as Fundations, and technology.

Reading

I have taken several courses in my teacher training on teaching reading. I have also kept abreast of the latest developments in teaching reading, such as differentiation and scaffolding. I am familiar with RTI and Wilson Reading, among other new advances in teaching reading.

Writing

My strong suit is teaching language arts, of which writing is a part. I have taught writing from the very basics (kindergarten) through advanced (essays, research papers).

Writing is an extension of speech. Technology can be used to help the student listen to his/her own speech. I have a strong background in English. I have extensive experience teaching language arts to elementary students. Also, I have taught English as a Second Language to both elementary and adult students.

TOEFL

I have taught TOEFL prep. I feel that my students made much progress through using the TOEFL prep manual with my guidance. It is so important to not only learn how to SPEAK English, but how to Listen, Read, and Write English. This is the backbone of any good ESL program. The TOEFL is an excellent tool to improve all four aspects of the English language for the student.

Spelling

I have always excelled at spelling. I love teaching language arts. I feel that spelling should be taught in context. It is fun to play games to teach spelling. Also, showing students how words are related to each other helps them to spell (e.g.,"animal" and "animation").

Elementary (K-6th)

I received a B.S. in elementary education from Northern Ill. University. I have a current 03 teaching certificate. I am highly qualified K-8, English, Reading and Language Arts. I also have an ESL approval on my teaching certificate and a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction.

I have taught fourth grade for eight years, as well as ELL grades K-5 for 2 1/2 years. I have tutored both elementary and adult students in reading, math grades 1-4, and English as a Second Language.

Phonics

I possess a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education, plus a Master's in Curriculum and Instruction. I am highly qualified in English, Reading and Language Arts. Phonics is an integral part of teaching reading, which is my strong suit.
