Hi - If you need a tutor in the following areas, contact me and I might be able to help. But first a little about me. I'm a mom, an accomplished professional, an anthropologist, and a life-long learner. I love learning and creating learning moments for others. Here are my areas of expertise:

I have a Master's degree in anthropology. My degree program had a "4 field approach" meaning I studied archaeology, biological/physical anthropology, linguistic anthropology, and cultural anthropology. While I focused on cultural anthropology, I have enough knowledge in the other sub-fields to tutor for undergraduate level courses. I first studied anthropology in high school, got a bachelor's degree in sociology and anthropology, and then my master's. My thesis was based on my fieldwork in Cape Verde, West Africa, and was about the cultural identity of Cape Verdeans as a creole one. I lived and worked in Cape Verde for 2 years, learned both Portuguese and their native, non-written language, Krioulo.

I have a knack for dance, and have been doing different kinds of dance for years. I was a ballroom dance instructor for a year, during which I learned up to intermediate levels in West Coast Swing, Fox Trot, Salsa, Waltz, Rumba, and Cha Cha. While in Cape Verde, I learned their local dance, which is similar to the Salsa in that it is a couple's dance with Latin and African origins, based on Zouk music.

I have been playing the piano since I was 5 years old. I play by ear, but learned to read music when I took up the alto saxophone in grade school band. I have a baby grand piano in my home and play every day.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have a bachelor's degree in sociology/anthropology, and a master's degree in anthropology. I have done fieldwork in Fife, Scotland, where I studied folk dancing for a summer, and in Cape Verde, West Africa, where I taught ESL for two years. While my expertise is in cultural anthropology, I am also knowledgeable enough in the other sub-fields (archaeology, biological/physical, and linguistic anthropology) to tutor undergraduate level courses. I was a TA for Anthropology 101 for a year, where I led group discussions and clarified concepts.

Ballroom Dancing

I taught ballroom dancing for a year, during which I learned the Waltz, the West Coast Swing, the Foxtrot, the Rumba, Cha Cha, and Salsa. I learned up to intermediate level, which enabled me to teach beginning level. I have a binder with at least 10 different move combinations for each of the above listed dances. I have an ear for music, and know which rhythms and music are best for each of the dances. I also learned the Passada, which is a native Cape Verdean couples dance, similar to Salsa.

Microsoft Outlook

I have been using Microsoft Outlook for more than 7 years. I can assist on managing emails by creating different views, color-coding to categorize, and using flags. I am also familiar with the calendar, setting up single and reoccurring meetings, sending meeting updates and cancellations, using the voting buttons, etc. Finally, I am familiar with using the tasks to improve time-management skills.

Public Speaking

I started a Toastmasters club at my company, and served as club president the first year. I have been a member for 3 and a half years now, and have earned my CC, or competent communicator award. This award is achieved after giving 10 speeches in Toastmasters meetings. I also give presentations at work, sometimes to 100 people. The skills I have learned are how to control nervousness, organizing your speech, speaking in simple sentences that are easy for the audience to grasp, including personal stories, using visual aids, purposeful movements and body language, etiquette for introducing speakers and being introduced, and giving persuasive and inspirational speeches.

Salsa Dancing

I was a ballroom instructor for a year, where I learned a variety of dances, including salsa. I can teach the very basics.

Social Studies

As part of my bachelor's degree, I earned a certification to teach secondary education social studies. To earn this, I majored in sociology and anthropology, but took courses in geography, history, and psychology as well. I student taught 9th grade geography, 11th grade sociology, and 12th grade psychology. I have a master's degree in anthropology.
