All of Patrick’s current tutoring subjects are listed at the left. You can read more about Patrick’s qualifications in specific subjects below.

ACT Reading

I am qualified to tutor ACT Reading due to two years of after-school tutoring at the high school where I taught high school English. I am interested in working with a student who is motivated and willing to bring his score to national level. I taught 34 years in the public school system. Currently I am an author who is awaiting publication of my first novel and play.

American History

American history defines who we are as a people today and will continue to influence our future as we become more aware of how we can shape government policies based on prevailing public opinion. Also, in order to understand who we are we, we must understand where we have come due to the past prevailing social trends. That's why I incorporate current events linked to the past to make United States history more personal when I present it to the student. I don't concentrate on dates and events, but have the student's interest in mind when I show him/her how they are part of the history as they analyze family background and it was shaped and influenced by history. History is our story, not an anonymous amalgam of dates and events.

Classics

I have always been a Latin scholar and love the skill of being able to translate from Latin to English. Helping student understand the culture and its nuances in the language has always been a love of mine. Grammar and vocabulary are of course essential to understanding and fluency in any language. Latin is the primary language for most of the romance languages and lends its self to the denotation and connotation of many English words. I have studied both in high school and as an undergraduate in college. I can make the learning of this ancient language, fun and interesting.

English

As a former English teacher of 34 years, I definitely have had experience in this subject matter. I know how to tailor lessons to meet my students learning levels as well as current interests. I will help your student raise his class average by at least two letter grades and approach his writing with better set of tools that he/she has learned.

Grammar

After teaching writing and language arts for 33 years on the secondary level, grammar is a field that I have mastered. Wriiting cannot be an effective tool of communication, unless one has a mastery of grammar. Also, being familiar with other languages, specifically Spanish, French, and Latin, I have realized how important the role of grammar is in communicating both orally and through the written word.

Proofreading

Proofreading for spelling, grammar, content and style are significant tools for writing that shows a student knows how to communicate correctly. Future employers and college admissions officers note a lack of proofreading skills in all potential candidates. I can show how to become adept at proofreading while still enjoying the task of writing. Please let me know if I can be of help.

Reading

Reading fluently is extremely important in being able to communicate technologically in this world of computers and other electronic devices.

I have tutoring methods to help those students who are struggling with fluency and comprehension issues. I would meet for one hour at a designated location and help the student gain confidence based on his/her learning level.

SAT Reading

I am very qualified to tutor any student for SAT Reading. Besides having 33 years of experience as a secondary English teacher in the public school system, I have tutored students for five years on both the SAT and ACT reading tests. I set goals for my students to achieve in the mastery of areas such as vocabulary and rhetoric. Grammar and usage are also stressed in my sessions. Students will be timed to read and interpret passages of college board caliber. I also bring in humor and relaxation in my sessions so students can begin to learn how to not stress during the actual taking of these tests. Please contact me if you think I meet your needs.

SAT Writing

I focus on grammar, usage, identification of types of rhetoric and most of all vocabulary which is very key to success on the SAT.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary development is the key to success in not only achieving a better score on either the ACT or SAT admissions test, but also it is significant factor in improvement of reading and writing. All modern communication relies on a well-grounded vocabulary. I can show the student how to remarkably improve his/her vocabulary while at the same time improve his/her reading comprehension.

World History

World History is the reason I am interested in current events. I have a minor in undergraduate studies in history. My instructors inspired us to travel and read as much as possible so we could better understand different cultures and political philosophies that we increasingly encounter throughout our lives.

History has an impact on my life and teach my students that their lives are influenced not only by current events but the history that shapes them.

Writing

I have written many manuscripts as well as legal documents. I also enjoy research to assist those who have to complete theses or other Master's papers.

Approved Subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet certified in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
