It's never too late to improve your ability to use the English language or improve your writing skills. Working with a published author, each student gets personalized age-specific help that is specifically targeted to use in school, at work or on the Internet. If you need to understand critical language basics we'll begin there. Or, if you choose, we will focus on more advanced skills, like how to write compelling reports and marketing copy for business or how to write for publication. Every session is designed to address the student's specific needs. All ages are welcome regardless of current skill level.

I am not your ordinary tutor. I bring to the table years of real-world experience applying best practices on traditional and online communications as applied to business development and management in a variety of industries. I have taught at Oakton Community college and have worked with individual students of all ages helping them achieve outstanding levels of proficiency. Before beginning, we will evaluate your goals and the challenges you need to overcome to achieve them. I can be a hard taskmaster if necessary, but I am easy to work with and perfectly honest. Let's talk.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I have been actively involved in owning and operating businesses for more than 40 years. Among the ones I owned and operated are a tool distributorship, a Real Estate Brokerage, a privately owned Illinois corporation (Joan-Marie Moss & Associates, Ltd.). I did all the research, planning and implementation required to set up a free-distribution newspaper in New Mexico.

I have been secretary and president of Oak Condominium Association Inc. Board of Directors for ten years with responsibility for hands-on management of this self-managed association. I founded a thriving writers' group with membership averaging 20-30 participants and facilitated that group for nearly 10 years.

I've served the VA and Ricardo Inc (an international software development company delivering products to automotive engineering sector). I've held countless part-time and full-time jobs in Illinois and New Mexico in various capacities. Some of the businesses I've worked with include restaurants, grocery stores, newspapers, Gateway, Freeman Coal, Bloomingdale Village governing body, a hospital in New Mexico, doctors, lawyers, and more.

I co-authored the Chicago Entrepreneurs' Sourcebook (no longer in print) and have written articles for trade magazines and business newspapers.

These experiences have given me an in-depth understanding of what makes a business work. I'd welcome the opportunity to help you.

Desktop Publishing

I have done desktop publishing since 1990 in my work as a technical writer and in the publication of more than 100 newsletters, 10 community calendars, two books, restaurant menus and more.

Dreamweaver

I am interested in providing Dreamweaver tutoring. I have used Dreamweaver extensively in building websites since 1999.

Microsoft Outlook

I have used Microsoft Outlook for more than 10 years in my personal business and in working as a technical writer.

Microsoft Publisher

I have used Microsoft Publisher in the production of countless newsletters, community calendars, restaurant menus since 1990.

Public Speaking

I took a college level course in public speaking, was a member of Toastmasters. I practiced what I learned in teaching a number of Adult Education courses at Oakton Community College and various radio appearances and continue using those same skills when conducting meetings and events for a writers' group and a condominium association. Public Speaking is fun and profitable when you learn the basics. I can help.

QuickBooks

I run QuickBooks for a Condominium Association and for my own small business. I consult with a CPA on a day-to-day for expert handling of specific financial challenges. In the past I helped a tax accountant to transition a number of businesses from Peachtree to QuickBooks. I am not a certified QuickBooks representative, but I can definitely help small businesses and sole practitioners understand and use the program for day to day bookkeeping needs.

Web Design

I have been working for 11 years designing and managing websites and blogs for myself and for others. I use Dreamweaver, FrontPage, handcoded html, php and a variety of graphics programs in this work. I have been solely responsible for these sites including securing the domain and host, planning, creation and setup, as well as content development, SEO, promotion and troubleshooting. From time to time I have coached others in use and application and troubleshooting their own sites. I can provide examples of my work upon request.
