Hi Everybody,

My name is Melissa, and I may be the ideal tutor for you!

I recently graduated from Griffith University in Brisbane Australia with a Bachelor's degree in Applied Theatre, after receiving an Advanced Diploma from St. Clair College in Windsor ON, Canada in Music Theatre Performance. I currently work for Spotlight Youth Theatre as a Director for their main stage productions across the Chicagoland area in addition to teaching a variety of theatre related classes for them in voice, music, dance and acting. I am also a independent contract seamstress specializing in theatrical costumes for various theatres across the area.

In addition to tutoring, I've been blessed to have an opportunity to mentor and direct children with the performing arts for over 10 years now in a variety of settings, from one on one to leading a cast of 90.

The arts are not a book-learned subject nor do I approach them that way, hands-on is the only way to master that tricky arpeggio or learn that sewing machine trick. A variety of exercises and practical experience are built into my tutoring sessions and are tailored to each students individual needs.

Music Theory

I studied piano for 5 years, and have studied violin for 8 years. I attained a level 3 in Music Theory from the Royal Music Conservatory of Canada while studying at St Clair College in Windsor ON Canada. I graduated from this program with a perfect GPA.

Literature

I've always been a lover of classic literature especially the works of Jane Austen and Shakespeare. Allow me to help you along the path to not only mastery of the classics, but also help you discover the joy and wonder within these incredible stories.

Ear Training

I have studied ear training for 3 years as part of the Music Theatre Performance program at St. Clair College inn Windsor, Canada. I received the highest grade point average for the class on record.

Theatre

I'm a professional musical theatre performer with over 100 musical productions under my belt. I've performed from Canada to Chicago to Australia in a variety of roles from leading lady (Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun, Woodstock Opera House, Natalie/Ed in All Shook Up, Phoenix Ensemble (winner of the 2011 GCAT for Best Leading Actress), and Sarah Brown in Guys and Doll) to Shakespeare (Sylvia in Two Gentlemen of Verona) to sailing the high seas with the Tall Ship Windy's inaugural production... Sewing

I started sewing at a young age and have since taken my love of theatre and sewing to a new level and become an independent contractor for various theatre companies in the Chicago Area, notably as the Wardrobe head for Schaumburg's Prairie Center for the Arts, where I have costumed and designed many of their musical performances as well as kept the costume inventory.

Ballet

I studied with the Pittsburgh Ballet for 2 years, and have taken over 10 years of ballet lessons from various teachers. I attained Level 3 Cecchetti Ballet while studying in Canada. I am also proficient in tap, jazz, modern and musical theatre styles of dance.
