I have a passion for learning and enjoy sharing it with others. This is why I love tutoring. It brings me satisfaction to see one of my students understand a concept that he or she has been struggling with. I have a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Saint Xavier University. As a student there I completed more than 150 hours of field experience in schools around Chicagoland. When I first meet a new student he or she is usually feeling frustrated with their schoolwork and afraid of failing. But after some tutoring time he or she usually starts to better understand their work and feel more confident. One mother of a child who was struggling with reading told me that after working with me her daughter thought that learning reading was fun now and was looking forward to our next session.
One experience that I feel helped me to become a WyzAnt tutor was working as a tutor at my university. There, I helped my fellow education students to prepare for the difficult task of passing their teacher certification exams. When the students first came in they were nervous about taking the test. Some of them had failed the test previously and were worried that they might never become teachers. I reviewed math, reading, and grammar with them individually and in small groups. I also helped the students to build their confidence in themselves so that they believed they could pass the test. After I had spent time working with them they felt ready about going to take the test because they had a solid understanding of the subject matter that they would face and had confidence in themselves as well. The students often came to me after the tutoring sessions and thanked me personally, which made the experience very rewarding.
One of my favorite things to do is to write. It gives me a way to express myself and deeply explore my own thoughts. When I am writing I can let my imagination run wild and it seems like anything is possible. I think that writing is an important tool for learning in all subject areas, too. It encourages students to try to clearly communicate ideas and see what they truly know. Brainstorming on paper can help one to generate and sort through ideas for many different types of assignments. Writing can also help students to think creatively and look at things in a different way. Additionally, students can learn about themselves by writing about their own life experiences.
Besides writing, I spend much of my time reading. I enjoy science fiction and fantasy novels, but also like to sometimes read nonfiction books because they can help me explore and learn about the world without even leaving home. Reading is of course also a fundamental skill for learning in any subject area. Sharing reading experiences with students and helping them to become better readers is something that I enjoy doing very much. I think that it is important for students to see reading as more than something to do as work for school, but also as something very enjoyable to do on their own time.
When I am not teaching, reading, or writing I spend time with some of my hobbies. I take pleasure in exercising. Some of my favorite physical activities include bicycling, tennis, soccer, and swimming. Computers are another of my favorite hobbies. I have a computer at home that I do all of my own repairs and upgrades on. I do some computer programming, and have created some of my own computer games. Another of my hobbies is astronomy. I actually own two telescopes. On clear nights I like to sit outside and look up at the sky. I find it fascinating that I can look up and see all kinds of different worlds that I will never visit physically, but can still watch and wonder about them.
I hope that by reading this you can see how passionate about learning I am. I am excited to meet your student and share this passion with him or her. I look forward to hearing from you!
