I am very well educated: BA in Political Science; JD in Law; and MA in Liberal Studies. I have practical experience including the practice of law and owning my own business. I have tutored students from age four through post-BA. My teaching experience includes assisting special education students in elementary school and teaching at the college level. I am able to tutor a variety of subject, including, but not limited to, study skills, English, writing and reading. In addition, I have a great deal of experience tutoring history, social studies, law, psychology, and elementary math and science. Most importantly, I am the tutor who will take my own time to help students whether it be reading the book they are working on or helping them to research the topic they are assigned. I am patient and understanding and really love to help students.

Grammar

My writing abilities stem from my years as an attorney writing briefs. I have helped many students of all ages write their papers. I truly enjoy this type of tutoring.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been successfully tutoring elementary students for over five years. I truly enjoy working with these students in every subject they takes. I feel that I have the ability to get students to enjoy their studies.

Phonics

I enjoy working with youngsters in phonics. I worked for Lindamood-Bell one summer and learned their fantastic way of teaching phonics. Teaching phonics is a course in repetition as the sounds may be repeated many times before being conquered.

Study Skills

Teaching study skills is about helping students learn how to organize their studies and time. One is coaching the student on how to best utilize their time, how to plan large projects so everything is not left until the end, how to stay focused, and how to achieve better success in school.

Business

I have successfully owned my own businesses for over 13 years and realize the importance of day to day management. I have also worked at several large corporations. I am versed in accounting and financial matters. My education includes several MBA courses taken at Pepperdine University in addition to my law degree. Successful business practices require, among other things, the ability to manage with dignity, predict trends, and stay ethical.

QuickBooks

I have run two businesses with Quickbooks during the past 10 years. It is a wonderful system for small businesses and easy for accountants to gather their needed information. Quickbooks is user friendly and fun to learn. With a session or two of tutoring, a student is able to use most features. I enjoy helping others learn Quickbooks.

Bar Exam

I have passed both the California and Illinois bars. I have helped several students with law school related work. I worked for a company that wrote bar questions, editing them. I also graduated from law school with honors.

COOP/HSPT

I have tutored two students for this entrance exam. Both students were successful and, as a result, were admitted to Loyal Prep in Wilmette.

Macintosh

I am a Mac person. I have two Mac computers, an iPad and an iPhone. Mac is the way to go because it is not prone to viruses. It is also very easy to use. Once one becomes familiar with the system, one can use it with little trouble. Its price is higher than a PC, but its longevity is worth it. I have used Macs for over 20 years.

Criminal Justice

I enjoy the area of criminal justice. When I taught in Roosevelt University's paralegal training program, I enjoyed teaching this course. In fact, I wrote the curriculum for it. It is an interesting field for most students and one that lends itself to tutoring.

Social Studies

Elementary and middle school social studies have always been on the top of my list for tutoring. It is a preview of life and which is often a source of discussion with students. They are always asking why when it comes to a subject. My college years were filled with history and political science courses and this is why I am attracted to this subject.
