My name is Melissa and I love helping students achieve success in Mathematics. During my time at Carroll University, I tutored for 3 of my 4 years, both on and off campus. During my final year there, I was tutoring the majority of the courses we offered, on top of being the student supervisor of the Math Commons, our tutoring center. I enjoy helping students understand the subject and realize that Math can be fun and not stressful.
Algebra 1 is the basis of all other Math courses in the future and is used in many professions.
Topics include: simplifying expressions, algebraic notation, number systems, understanding and solving for variables, functions, graphing and using information tables, inequalities and polynomial equations.
Algebra 2 builds on the skills learned in Algebra 1 and digs further into variable mathematics.
Topics include: functions and graphing (linear, quadratic, logarithmic, exponential), complex numbers, systems of equations and inequalities, and relations.
This can also include beginning trigonometry and probability and statistics.
Elementary Math, from grades 1-8, are covered. Everything from simple addition and subtraction to the beginnings of Algebra, including: calculator and homework help, fun activities, hands-on examples, and extra practice worksheets and problems. Special focus is put on the steps to problem solving, especially with word problems (this is usually for the higher grades, but can be offered to any age student). I use a special worksheet that often helps students correctly complete word problems, creating a foundation for the rest of their mathematics courses.
Geometry is unlike many other Math courses in that it is a spatial/visual class and deals minimally with variables and equations.
Geometry students can expect topics such as: proofs using theorems and axioms, calculation of distance, area and volume, congruence and similarity of triangles, transformations (rotations, reflections, translations), and properties of geometric shapes.
I can also help with the use of a compass, protractor, and graphing calculators.
Prealgebra is the precursor to future Algebra classes and essentially all Math courses.
Work here can begin with simple multiplication and division, working up to beginning Algebraic equations. The main focus however, is generally in word problems. A good foundation in understanding and solving word problems not only creates a basis in Mathematics, but also prepares the student for real-life situations.
Topics include: working with fractions, decimals, percents, positive/negative integers, rational numbers, ratios and proportions, and algebraic equations.
Very friendly and polite! — Melissa is a new tutor for my daughter who was struggling with Geometry. My daughter is on the shy side until she gets to know someone. My daughter said that she is feeling more comfortable with Melissa and that she is learning from her. My daughter said that it is starting to make more sense and that she likes how Melissa figures the problem out while my daughter is figuring it out and then the ...
