I am a local teacher certified in elementary education, learning disabilities and behavioral disorders. I hold a Masters Degree in School Counseling and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor. I am presently available to tutor local students (grades 1-6) in their homes. I specialize in the areas of special education, tutoring,
reading and study skills.

I love working with children and have been successful at establishing a good rapport with them. As a counselor, I am sensitive to their emotional and academic needs. It is very important that my students believe in their ability to learn. By teaching them learning strategies, study skills and test taking skills, I can increase their chances for academic success.

In the last few years I have used scientific and research based methods in teaching reading, phonics, phonological awareness, vocabulary, comprehension, as well as fluency techniques and materials. In addition, I use and have been trained in close reading, This is a strategy that helps students investigate, interpret and understand reading passages in depth.

The learning strategies I teach are based on data indicating the student's strengths and weaknesses in absorbing and processing information. In other words, I teach to the student's strongest learning modality (visual, auditory or kinesthetic). I also break down concepts and information so that a student can learn and succeed one step at a time. Last but not least, I make learning fun and engage students through games and humor.

ADD/ADHD

I am a certified special education teacher with 12 graduate level hours in Special Education. In addition, I have a Master's Degree in school counseling. My personal as well as classroom/tutoring experience includes having a child with ADD/ADHD as well as extensive experience with elementary age students demonstrating this challenge. It is key to: establish a good working relationship with the student, be patient, help the child to focus on the subject content by making the lessons fun and creative, give the child breaks as needed, engage in some physically active games in teaching or rehearsing concepts in use the child's learning strengths/learning mode and interests to approach the subject being taught, and last but not least, help the student find a way to keep him/herself well organized.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified special education teacher with 12 graduate level hours in Special Education. In addition, I have a Master's Degree in school counseling. I have had extensive classroom experience with elementary school students. It is key to: establish a good working relationship with a student, be patient, make the lessons fun and creative, use the child's learning strengths/learning mode and interests to approach the subject being taught. I work hard to build confidence in the student so s he/she become confident and believe that he/she can learn.

Elementary Math

I took a course in Teaching Elementary Math. I also use Touch Math methods when applicable. I find that it is vital to teach elementary math by using hands on methods with manipulative materials. I teach the key math vocabulary, train them in writing extended responses (the steps they use to solve a problem) as well as covering the common core math standards for their grade level.

Grammar

I have a solid ability and proven track record in expressing myself clearly with the written word. Writing using appropriate grammar is an important skill in the classroom as well as in the world of academia and careers. I want to share my knowledge of good grammar with students so that they can share and showcase their thoughts with others to their greatest advantage.

Handwriting

As a special education teacher, I have had considerable experience in helping children with handwriting/small motor skills challenges. I use clay, stikki wickkki sticks, writing in the air, practicing on white boards, specialized worksheets and stencils, hand over hand and a variety of other techniques that appeal to children with this difficulty. It is very important to find the technique that the children enjoy doing so that they are willing to practice their letters/writing to achieve success.

Phonics

I use a variety of resources/methods to work on phonics skills and enjoy teaching those skills to empower students to read fluently and with confidence.

I have always excelled in writing as a means of personal expression. It is reflected in excellent evaluations of this ability by professors, friends and family. Many colleagues and others have asked me to review their letters of application/letters of interest for jobs and graduate schools. It has always been my pleasure to review the writing of students and others so that they can best represent their thoughts, feelings, credentials in the best possible light.

Spelling

For spelling, I use words sorts with flash cards. Students classify their word by root words, prefixes and suffixes, phonemic word families. Then the students color code the word parts.
Examples: incapable card (in prefix will be written in red) capable root word in blue; incompetent (coded the same as above).

beach ('ea' will be colored green)('ch' will be coded orange) teach, reach, peach (coded the same).

Study Skills

I am experienced in and enjoy teaching study skills. Study skills are necessary methods and strategies that are key to a students educational success. As an experienced special education teacher, teacher's aide and tutor I have the necessary background to teach study skills. My past study skill students have been successfully taught how to employ multisensory means to comprehend and remember material/breaking down the material to be learned into meaningful chunks (to the learner) to improve recall. Tape recorders, color coding material to be learned, using flash cards, playing match games with cards using words and definitions, making up songs/rhymes with material studying by playing catch with a ball (Q and A) are some examples of effective study skills. Once a student learns how to best organize and assimilate subject content, he/she can more effectively and efficiently learn the material. When study skills and strategies are learned used and practiced they can spell big success in a child's academic endeavors.

Vocabulary

When I teach academic vocabulary skills to students I follow the following steps:
-I ask them if they know the word meaning, if they have a clue to the meaning or if they are clueless. I also encourage them to look at word affixes.
-If necessary we look up the definition in a dictionary and then I ask them for a synonym and antonym for the word.
-Next I ask them to write a sentence with the word.
-Finally, I ask them to draw a picture that demonstrates the word's meaning.
- I ask some students to connect the word with an action that helps them remember the word.
