I have wide-ranging experience teaching English as a Second Language (from beginners' conversational English to composition and reading advanced academic texts) as well as Social Studies. A specialist in history, I hold a secondary teacher's certification in Social Studies from the State of New York, and am competent to teach ancient and modern history, including US history, as well as current events and politics. My areas of expertise in history include ancient Rome, modern India, the Caribbean, and colonial and indigenous North America. I am widely traveled, and can bring a variety of cultural insights and personal experience into my teaching. In addition, I am largely proficient in French, have a strong working knowledge of Turkish, and can apply my understanding of linguistics to a variety of language-learning circumstances.
My teaching approach is essentially Socratic: I ask questions, drawing out student knowledge and guiding the learner at her own pace, rather than impose a preconceived script. At the same time, I set high expectations for myself as well as my students, and I work to ensure that lessons never lose sight of their learning targets and goals. I pride myself on communicating clearly and building a cordial, supportive relationship with my students.
