Are you looking to polish your English speaking skills for your job interview, speech class, or for communicating with your co-workers? Would being able to write in English clearly and effectively enhance your job performance, or raise your college grade? Are you preparing for college entrance exams and need to increase your English vocabulary, writing, or speaking skills? Then I have the skills to help you learn and succeed!

As a world traveler, I understand the challenges of communicating in a language that is not your first language. I have a passion to help adult learners enhance their speaking, writing, listening, and speaking abilities through task-based learning. I believe that adult learners learn best through understanding the mechanisms that are causing their communication difficulties and then practicing correct behaviors. I am also willing to design and implement teaching strategies that are specific to the learners goals and objectives.

I have taught English as a Foreign language in the areas of speaking, listening, reading, and writing in Thailand and in China at the university level and tutored students for the vocabulary, reading, and listening sections for the TEOFL and the vocabulary for the SAT. I have also tutored high school writing and conversational English. My personal education has focused on linguistics for my undergraduate degree at Illinois State University, and for my master's degree at Payap University in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Through my education and experience I have learned how to pinpoint and effectively help students enhance their English abilities.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you achieve your goals soon!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have experience teaching English as a Foreign Language in both Thailand and China at the university level in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. I have also tutored one on one in these subjects. I enjoy working with adult learners to help them improve their skills in these areas through storytelling, task-based learning, and practicing the tasks that they must accomplish for their job or education.

Grammar

Grammar is my specialization. I am familiar with English grammar, how it works, and how to explain it, as well as understanding grammar in other languages. I believe that, with adult learners, it is important to be able to explain 'why' a certain grammar construction occurs the way it does and then to practice it's correct use, and why that use is correct. English is a difficult language and has many exceptions but I do my best to help my students understand the underlying rules to best use English to meet their goals.

Proofreading

Proofreading is an essential part of written communication. Through practice, I can help you learn your most common mistakes and improve your writing ability in any genre; from office e-mails to creative writing.

Reading

Accurate and quick reading can be developed through understanding the structures that different genres of writing use. When teaching reading, I will focus on the areas that give you the most difficulty and teach you how to find the information that is most important quickly. Reading and writing are best taught together because the skills used to outline the best way to write are those that will help you understand how to read in an effective way.

Writing

Effective writing in English is a skill useful in every area of life and will affect how your teachers, professors, employers, and co-workers view your competence. Understanding the expected structure of a particular piece of writing can be the difference between success and failure. I have experience teaching the structures of how to write, expanding vocabulary, and improving grammatical structures for everything from work e-mails to formal academic papers.
