Math is a language that we use to describe reality and solve problems!

Too many students think of math as an arcane set of formulas that you have to learn and if you recite them correctly you get the answer like magic. I focus on building both "lower order" thinking (adding, memorizing formulas) with higher order thinking (problem solving, critical thinking, analyzing and explaining) so the students gets "fluent" is reading, writing and speaking math. I often use ongoing projects as a way to tie information together and to better assess skills and progress.

I just finished my MS in education I have 3 years experience as a sub (all subjects and levels) and 1 year as a algebra teacher. I spent 10 years as a civil engineer in charge of all aspects of project development, and it has made a huge impact on the way I teach. Algebra 1

I taught Algebra 1 in my masters internship where I was regularly complimented for my lesson plans and activities. In addition Algebra was at the heart and soul of my work as an engineer, where I spent all day setting up and solving equations and working with coordinate planes.

Algebra 2

I have a Masters in Secondary Education- Mathematics. I also have 10 years experience in engineering, in which I've used algebra on a daily basis.

Microsoft Excel

In 10 years as an engineer I used Microsoft Excel on an almost daily basis to track data and make calculations. In addition as a volunteer IT manager for a non profit I was responsible for training staff and volunteers in various programs including Excel. I have lots of experience in linking Excel books to each other, using the various functions, and formatting.

Geometry

I am currently finishing my MS in secondary Education (last class), and my content area is math. I have 4 years teaching experience, including teaching math in my master's internship where I was regularly complimented for my lesson plans and activities. In addition Geometry was extremely important in my work as an engineer. I spent much of my time creating and making calculations dealing with points, lines, areas and volumes, so I am able to show real world applications of what I teach!

I have extensive experience in writing technical documents as an engineer as well as work with advertising for non profits, in which I wrote copy a well as critiqued and edited the works of others. I'm well versed in essay writing and understanding how they are graded.

ACT Math

I am currently finishing my MS in secondary Education (last class) and my content area is math. I am familiar with test taking procedures and protocols. I look for weaknesses in content learning and help remediate the learning gap. I also teach how to prepare for the exam, including mental and physical preparation.

While my content area is math I have an engineering background, which gives me a large edge in interpreting the texts used on the exam. I am familiar with test taking procedures and protocols. AutoCAD

For 10 years I worked in Civil Engineering I did all my own drafting. I am highly skilled with AutoCAD 2007 and have experience in the Civil 3D add on.

Civil Engineering

From 1998- 2008 I worked as a Civil Engineer in Land Development in Illinois, including from 2003-2008 as a Licensed PE. I did mostly commercial development, renovation and roadway design. I was responsible for all phases of development from initial site investigation through as built drawings and did my own drafting.
