“Learning was never boring with Mrs. Maureen.” “She explains things in a way that I can understand.”“My child never complained about going to school with Mrs. Maureen as the teacher.” “She always took the time to be thorough and answer all my questions and concerns.”
These are some of the many positive comments I heard repeatedly from parents and teachers in my 20 years experience teaching elementary school, both general education and special education. I have taught grades 3, 4, and 5. I have taught students with ADHD, learning disabilities, cognitive impairments, and autism. I have taught gifted students. And no matter what the setting, I use positive feedback, engaging lessons, and lessons that meet the student where he/she is at. I believe that engaging the child through his/her natural interests and curiosity is the best way to inspire learning. I believe that all children deserve to be challenged and when given support, he/she can meet those challenges. I believe children feel success when doing things that are difficult for them; and this success builds their self esteem. Through all my interactions with children, nurturing their self esteem by supporting their learning growth is essential. I look forward to the opportunity to work with your child.

ADD/ADHD

Every year as a classroom teacher I have enjoyed having students with ADD/ADHD. While some teachers find them challenging, I find that they are very bright, and often have a hard time channeling their energy in the right direction. Students with ADD/ADHD need a patient person to teach them coping strategies for success in the regular classroom. In addition they may need modifications such as tasks broken down, a schedule, frequent breaks, motivators, additional movement during work time, etc.

Aspergers

Out of my 20 years of teaching experience, 12 years have been in special education including students on the spectrum. My responsibility has been providing assistance with language expression and social emotional skill training.

Elementary (K-6th)

Having taught elementary school for 20 years, I have tremendous experience to offer my clients. In addition, I have my masters in curriculum and instruction. I stay updated with best practices in instruction through various professional journals. In addition, I am knowledgable in the new common core standards.

Phonics

I use a variety of methodologies in teaching phonics. Children have different modalities they respond to, thus, visual, kinesthetic, and auditory methods are used. I follow a scope and sequence to determine the lapses in a student's acquistion of phonics skills. In addition phonemic awareness activitites are integrated because this is an essential foundation of reading and spelling success.

Special Needs

I have 20 years teaching teaching experience, 12 of which are IEP special education teaching including students with eligibility in: autism spectrum, LD,EBD,ADD/ADHD. I use research based methodologies and best teaching practices for academic skill acquisition, receptive and expressive language and social emotional skill training.
