I love speaking and teaching Spanish! I began to learn the Spanish language when I was fourteen years old, and I continued to formally study this language for five years--even during the early part of my undergraduate studies. Since then, I have continued to informally study Spanish, both through wonderful online resources and through personal relationships with Spanish-speaking individuals. These relationships have enabled me to maintain and to improve my use of the Spanish language.
I just finished my 19th year of private tutoring! I have privately tutored my own children for 19 years as their home school teacher, and I am in my fourth year of tutoring with WyzAnt. I am now working with my 54th individual WyzAnt student; and I am currently teaching Spanish to a small group of professionals in a corporate setting at a local business. Furthermore, I am certified as a substitute teacher in Illinois, and I will be teaching in the Naperville District 203 middle and high schools as a substitute Spanish teacher beginning in August of 2014.
While working with WyzAnt students, I have become very familiar with the REALIDADES and the AVANCEMOS curricula used at the Naperville 203 and 204 schools, at Oswego East, and at other local high schools. During the 2013-2014 school year I also became familiar with EXPRéSATE as I tutored Spanish students from York High School in Elmhurst and Yorkville High School. I have also worked with Spanish students from private high schools such as Benet Academy in Naperville, Rosary High School in Aurora, and Fenwick High School in Oak Park.
While most teachers at the high school level use a standard text book approach, some teachers at these schools use an immersion approach: the teacher will only speak to the students in Spanish. This can mean that the needed grammar foundation is lacking. I can provide that foundation.
I work not only with high school students but also with college students and adults. My most recent older students have been from College of DuPage, Loyola University, Chicago, and, as mentioned earlier, from a business setting in which the company owner wants both he and some of his employees to learn Spanish. In this latter setting, I function as a group teacher with a set curriculum rather than as a private tutor who works with a student using his/her current class materials.
While covering the basics, I will push each student to talk in Spanish as much as possible - even with the limited vocabulary of a 1st year student. Each student will have to spend a large portion of the tutoring session practicing his oral Spanish skills. I will often ask my students to "teach" me a concept in order to solidify his understanding of a concept and to reveal his true level of understanding. Furthermore, I will challenge him/her to become a true learner and to seek mastery rather than to simply learn enough to pass a test. I will also teach and demonstrate mnemonics (memory devices), whenever possible so that a student can learn more effective ways of learning and of preparing for tests. Finally, I will also direct all students to some wonderful online resources for further study when needed.
During the course of these tutoring sessions, I will communicate openly and regularly with each parent(when appropriate), about each tutoring session and about how his/her student is progressing. I will highlight each student's strengths and successes whenever possible, because it is often very difficult for parents to see beyond the weaknesses of a struggling student. I want to help parents to become their child's number one cheerleaders so that they can motivate their student through encouragement to move forward and reach his/her potential!
Excellent Spanish tutor. — Marianne N. is an excellent Spanish tutor. My freshman daughter was struggling in her Spanish 1 class. She was getting more and more frustrated, felt very lost in class. The classroom instruction wasn't sinking in. Her grades were inconsistent, averaging a low B/high C by sheer will. Her homework assignments were what kept the grade passable but her quiz and test scores showed the true story, ...
