I have taken 24 credit hours in special education. Plus, I have had many students with ADD/ADHD, and dealt with each student differently because each student has different needs with ADD/ADHD. I want to show them and give them tools that they can not only use with me while tutoring but when they are in the classroom.
I am qualified to tutor in this area because I currently work with a student who is autistic. I work with him four hours a day. I have created a token economy to assist him in learning to sit for 5 min. or longer. As I work with him, we not only work on educational activities but behavior due to the fact he is currently non-verbal and he is starting to talk and complete sentences. I work with the parents every Saturday taking him out to new places he has never been (i.e., mall, library, zoo, etc.) to learn not only how to behave but new vocabulary words. I also been on the district Autistic team to assist teachers in how to work with children who are autistic in his/her classroom. I have also created social stories for the students to use when they are having difficulty in an area or I feel there could be difficulty when he or she is trying something new.
I have a teaching certificate in K-9.
I have taught first grade for 11 years, and phonics was a huge part of the curriculum. I also taught phonemic awareness for the students, and have a great deal of knowledge using Fontes and Ponell. For five years, I was the school representative for our Reading Curriculum.
During my 13 years as a teacher, I have tutored numerous students in reading, and I was the school representative and mentor for our district's reading program.
I have 24 credit hours in Special Education, and my additional endorsement with my Master's Degree was in Administration in Special Education. While I taught first grade, 10 out of the 11 years I had students with various special needs in my classroom.
I tutored students in my classes, and gave them strategies to be more successful in the classroom and while they were preparing for tests. I showed students I have tutored in the past in Jr. High how to take notes, and how to highlight their notes to assist them with studying for a test they may have at school. Students scores increased with my assistance.
