Combining seven years' experience in the high school classroom with a strong communications background and interpersonal skills, I can best help your student in need of mathematics assistance. Earning a perfect score on both the English and Math portions of the ACT, I received a mathematics degree from North Central College. After working in mass media for several years, I moved to the Washington DC area and trained to be a teacher, and I spent seven great years in the field, instructing both small and large groups in nearly every mathematics course at the high school level: from algebra and geometry to calculus and statistics, with many courses in between.

When students come to me for help, I strive to find their current level and set goals with them. Not only is it important for a student to achieve their immediate goals, but the knowledge they take home from me should stick with them; in mathematics, each course builds from others, and students should build the best foundations they can. Use of a graphing calculator can be a blessing and a curse, and it's essential that students recognize how calculators can both help and hinder them in their quest to understand mathematics, the true universal language.

Discrete Math

I taught Discrete Math at the high school level for four years. I used the Discrete Math book of Tannenbaum and Arnold. The one-semester course covered the first eight chapters of the book (not including networks) and included some work on fractals and recursion. My class included several projects on fair division, voting methods and Hamiltonian circuits. It was an enjoyable class to teach and I miss it greatly.

Drums

I've been a lifelong drummer, starting in fifth grade and playing in jazz bands in high school and college. I was the drummer for "Ted From Accounting" (a NW suburban cover band) for several years, and I now teach drums independently. I connect what the students needs to learn with what they already know and what music they love. The top three skills of a full-set drummer is to (1) keep a steady beat, (2) hit the bass drum at the right time (especially when the bass player's rhythm is lousy), and (3) fill when appropriate. Contact me if you have any further questions.

Guitar

For most of my adult life, I've played guitar. While I can strum or finger-pick, I typically play on an acoustic guitar. I've played at coffee houses and open mikes, and prefer to play folk and pop, though I'll get into good rock as well. I sing while playing and play while singing. I've written a few songs and have a lunch YouTube videos available, should you choose to see them to determine my skill. My teaching style is to combine what the students wants to know with what they already know. Technique is important, especially at the beginning. I want the students to develop their ear as well as their hands. Contact me with any other questions, thanks. - Dave
