I have taught writing and literature for many years at the two-year college level. As an experienced English teacher, I have taught grammar and mechanics as well as paragraph unity and coherence. In addition, I am familiar with test-taking strategies that will help test-takers maximize their chances of doing well on the ACT. I have also tutored elementary and high school level students in literary interpretation and ACT preparation. As a published writer I have an active and working knowledge of steps in the writing process such as idea generation, drafting, revision, and proofreading.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

We will focus upon close reading of the questions to make sure directions are understood and followed; grammatical structures such as parallelism; how to recognize the most concise sentence in a group. There will be supervised practice tests and immediate feedback. There will also be focused attention on areas that need improvement.

ACT Reading

How can I help your daughter prepare for these tests? I cans tutor her directly in any English grammar or mechanics she made need to improve to do well on the tests. For the reading tests I can teach her to strategies that will allow her to read the passages in the most efficient way to get the answers to the questions that follow. If she takes practice tests, I can over her answers with her and help her understand why certain answers are wrong and how to do better on that kind of question.

English

The student will learn appropriate word usage, such as the difference between such commonly confused words as "who's" and "whose," "there", "they're," and "their" and other troublemakers. The student will also learn to use commas and apostrophes, as well as less often used punctuation marks, according to the standard rules of punctuation.

Grammar

The student will learn the rules of agreement,or proper matching of verb with subject and of pronoun with noun. He will be able to identify when to use "which" after a comma and when no comma before "which" is called for. These and other rules of English grammar and standard English usage will be covered.

Literature

How to speak and write about literary works. Often students have insights into novels or poems that they lack the confidence to express, but which others find interesting and persuasive once they are put into words. Learning how to articulate and support one's ideas about literary works, as well as practice in interpretation and explication, will be covered.

Writing

The ability to write clearly and coherently is still one of the most important skills one can have, both for personal satisfaction and career advancement. I have experience in employing and giving instruction in all stages of the writing process--generating ideas, forming a thesis, getting down a first draft, and in revising to form the best possible letter, school paper, article or story
