College Counseling

I worked as the director of education at the Science and Arts Academy in Des Plaines, IL in the early days of its inception. During that time, several of our students— many of whom had been homeschooled for many years— sought advice and information from me on directions for college applications, as well as ideas for majors and courses of study based on interests, skills, abilities and likelihood of employment following college. More recently, I counseled undergraduate students in honors courses and choice of majors, as well as in graduate school admissions, as the Coordinator of the University Honors Program at NEIU. (2000-2010)

My undergraduate degree is in Speech, Communications, Theatre, and English. Following my earning the BA, I returned to complete teacher training and became certified in Language Arts, Literature, Humanities, and Social Studies.

My Master's degree is in Special Education, with coursework in teaching of reading and math/science to special needs students. Currently, I teach in a Master's Level Program online from NOVA Southeastern University, to teachers earning their master's degree. Phonics, reading, and related subjects are included in the coursework. I can provide references from those teachers to whom I currently instruct.

Study Skills

Teacher-educator, MA program in reading, math, motivation, study skills. Research-based, problem-solving model. Extensive experience with learning theories, challenged learners.

Vocabulary

A rich vocabulary distinguishes the intelligent and educated individual. Reading and taking note of words that are unfamiliar, and then discovering what those words mean, how they are used, and when they are used properly, can often determine your success in school essays and job interviews.

The inside secret to figuring out what a word means is to learn its "roots", or basic parts. I can help you learn to do this in a short time.

Writing

You can learn to write with clarity and focus. There is a formula for good writing, and once you learn this, your papers will become easier and more interesting to read!

Good writing takes an idea, develops it for the reader, makes a point, wraps it up, and leaves the reader wanting to read your next written work.
