I am a former elementary school teacher, currently working part-time as a librarian in an underprivileged school. I have many years of experience working with students on a one-on-one basis, as well as in small groups. I am patient and kind, have a great sense of humor, and will employ many different methods to help your child achieve success, based on his/her learning style.

I am married with two awesome teenagers, and am eager to start working with your child!

Vocabulary

One of my best subjects! I love words, the origins of their roots, and what they mean. Having a more vast vocabulary enhances both oral and written experiences. Simply put, students understand concepts more easily when they have an extensive vocabulary to back them up.

Grammar

My best subject! Based on past experience/results, I am confident that I can teach grammar in a clear, easily understandable manner.

Reading

As a librarian, I read to students pre-K through 8th grade. I also engage them in oral question-and-answer sessions, testing for comprehension, cause/effect, theme, as well as other literary concepts.

Writing

One of my best subjects! In college, I used to take writing courses just for fun. I have extensive experience as a writing tutor.

English

I taught English as 6th grade teacher; I have several years' experience tutoring English and other subjects.

Literature

In addition to being a former classroom teacher, I worked part-time in a children's bookstore for several years. I am currently a school librarian, and have vast knowledge of children's/young adult literature.

Proofreading

As it goes hand-in-hand with grammar, this is also my best subject! I am very detail-oriented, and not only do I focus on mechanics, but also structure and form. I will guide students in making their paper MAKE SENSE.

Spelling

One of my best subjects! As a tutor, I have certain tactics I use to get students to quickly learn how to spell words correctly, study for spelling tests, and RETAIN the spelling of the words.

Elementary Math

I taught 6th grade (self-contained); was a math teacher for team. I have several years' experience tutoring math through grade 9.

Elementary Science

I taught science as a 6th grade teacher, and have several years' experience tutoring science and other subjects.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified in Elementary Education (Type 03/K-9th) and taught 6th grade (self-contained). I was also a substitute teacher of all subjects/all grades, and am currently a librarian at a pre-K through 8th grade school.

Phonics

On a voluntary basis, I pulled lowest 2nd grade reading group for extra help in reading/vocab/phonics during 2011-2012 school year. As a librarian, phonics skills are touched upon during library time, by reading/discussing books (pre-K, K, 1, and 2).

Study Skills

As a librarian, I have received groups of students (mostly gr 5-8) to work on study skills/study for tests. As a volunteer tutor at an underprivileged school (2008-2010), study skills were focused on often.
