My passion for knowledge drives me to teach; I love to learn and I enjoy allowing others to feel the same satisfaction. As a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison as well as Keio University’s Japanese Language Program I understand exactly how rewarding hard work can be. Having taught at my local church, tutored when a student at Adalai E. Stevenson High School, and participated in the Japanese Conversation Club I have had the privilege to help other’s truly realize their potential and see their subject knowledge blossom. Knowledge is my passion and I am thereby called to teach.
I specialize in tutoring language arts. As a native English speaker and previous American High School student, I am very familiar with the reading, writing, and general English portions of the ACT and SAT exams. I also have a love of literature and am familiar with most texts used in AP curricula. Having proofread for my Japanese professor and corrected many of the papers by my peers for whom English was a learning language, I am familiar with the harder aspects of English learning and look to help anyone of any speaking level to improve their ability. My degree is in Japanese Languages and Literature; I also studied abroad for a year in Tokyo. I am currently studying for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test N1. I am comfortable teaching any level of up to advanced speakers. I studied Spanish all through my primary education culminating in my studies of the AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature courses and remain comfortable teaching beginner to intermediate Spanish. I can also teach generalized translation skills for any length of text and techniques for reading in a foreign language.
I want my student’s experience to be as rewarding as possible and as such I will often ask for feedback. To ensure I can help my students reach their goals, I also offer a free consultation session to anyone interested in studying with me.
My student’s time is very important to me and I hope my own can will be respected in exchange. I can be very flexible with time, though I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy and of course offer makeup lessons.
I prefer to meet in a nearby library or quiet coffee shop. I am of course happy to negotiate another meeting place if this is inconvenient for a student. For groups of students, where we meet will be a decision for the entire group.
I look forward to hearing from you. I hope to help you achieve your learning goals and cultivate a love of knowledge in you!
I have also been employed as a proof-reader by a Japanese professor. I scored a 31 on the ACT with a very strong score on the English section. I am confident in my ability to coach for this section of the exam.
I scored a 31 on the ACT with a very strong score in reading. I am confident I can teach test-taking strategies related to this portion of the test such as analyzing for theme, identifying key passages, and reading diction carefully.
I scored a 31 on the ACT with a perfect score in the science section. I can assist in developing the strategies necessary to extract information from the tables and diagrams and answer without being distracted by superfluous information.
While abroad, I participated as a conversational English tutor through KOSMIC, Keio University's international language group. I have also proofread for an English student as a learning language professor and helped him to improve his grammar, spelling, and sentence structure.
I completed the Japanese Language Program at Keio University, a one-year intensive language program conducted by Keio University in Tokyo. I finished at the upper intermediate level. One of my BA degrees from UW-Madison is in Japanese Languages and Literature. I am currently studying to take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test level N1.
I studied beginner's Korean at UW Madison and participated in a Korean-English conversation partner exchange. I am fully competent in hangul and basic grammar structures. I can confidently teach beginning students the basics of the writing system, pronunciation, keyboard skills, and basic conversation.
I studied Spanish all through my middle and high school career including the AP Spanish Language and AP Spanish Literature courses at Adlai E. Stevenson High School. I am currently refurbishing my Spanish skills, but am confident in my ability to teach elementary and intermediate Spanish. I can also teach general translation techniques for any length of text and travel crash-courses.
