Reading and writing skills are essential for success in high school and beyond. If you need help analyzing a book, writing a research paper, or polishing grammar skills, I can help you. If you need to improve your English, Reading, and/or Writing scores for the ACT, I can help you. I have taught secondary English for eleven years (both at the junior high and high school level). I am currently a stay-home mom, tutoring on the side. One of my ACT students improved his reading score by ten points (yes, that is amazing, and a ten-point jump is very unusual). We can work together to improve your grades, tackle your summer reading projects, or prep for the September ACT test date.
Most students fly through the English portion of the ACT, just editing as they read. This is not the best strategy. 35 of the 75 questions for English focus on writing strategy (rhetorical skills); students must understand the content of the passage to answer these questions correctly. I will work with students to hone grammar skills as well as rhetorical skills. We'll find a pace and a strategy that work for you. I suggest picking up a Baron's or Kaplan's book (I am familiar with both), and we'll meet. I have a number of supplemental material to build off the prep book of your choice.
Students assume that ACT Reading will be easy. After all, they know how to read, right? The ACT Reading tests so much more than mere reading, and the hardest part about the test is the TIMING. After a sample test, we'll work out a timing strategy, review question types, and determine how to eliminate answer traps. Contact me, and we'll get started on improving your score.
I am a certified teacher in English/Language Arts for grades 6 through 12. I have taught at-risk students and well as honors students. I am familiar with junior high curriculum as well as high school curriculum. If you are struggling in your English classes, I can help you. "English" covers literature, writing, grammar, test-taking skills, etc. Let's improve your English grade!
I believe in functional grammar instruction. In other words, students should learn how to use grammar effectively to build sentences, paragraphs, and essays. Grammar exercises should focus on real life situations and uses. I can help you improve your grammar skills as well as your writing skills.
Are you struggling with your American Literature class? Is Shakespeare torture for you? Is poetry analysis driving you crazy? Don't turn to Cliff Notes yet. Let's meet, and we'll tackle your reading assignment together.
Proofreading is an essential part of the writing process. Have you written a paper and need an extra set of eyes to proof or edit it? Do you need to learn how to proof a paper? I am familiar with MLA, APA, and Chicago formatting; I can help you with your work.
Is reading for pleasure completely foreign to you? Let's improve your reading skills through material that you will enjoy. We can transfer the skills from pleasure reading to assigned reading, and your grades will improve. I will introduce a number of reading strategies and graphic organizers to help you analyze your reading in a fun and educational way.
The ACT scorers are looking for specific elements in your ACT Writing essay. Do you have those elements? I have scored standardized testing before, and I know what scorers are looking for. Let me help you improve your writing score!
Are you writing a research paper? Organization is key to successful research paper. Whether your format is MLA, APA, or Chicago, I can help you!
Are you writing an essay for junior high or high school? I can help you draft ideas, compose a thesis, and proof your work.
