Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold a current Illinois type 3 certificate, and have taught elementary grades since 1983. I am also a certified media specialist and administrator. I mainly taught in grades 3 through 6, but am endorsed for middle school English and Social Studies. I've taught a both private and public schools, and have tutored for 15 years.

Phonics

As a student in the 1960's, I was given a strong background in phonics. As an undergraduate education major at Beloit College, I studied the teaching of phonics as part of my teaching of reading class. Even when phonics fell out of favor in the 1980's, I continued to teach it in my classes. I am glad that it is back in the mainstream curriculum.

Public Speaking

As Head of School I've spoken to both large and small groups, in formal and informal settings. I taught public speaking, and have given seminars on various topics as part of my membership and leadership in SALIS. I now am an adjunct professor, teaching in the higher education leadership program at Argosy University. I've written over 50 articles published on my last school's website. I've also taught story telling on the college level.

Study Skills

I have been teaching since 1983, and now am an adjunct professor and educational consultant. I taught College 101 at Moraine Valley CC, which is basically a study skills class for incoming freshmen. As a consultant, the majority of my work involves teaching study skills to elementary and high school students.
