My name is Kelly. I am currently a 6th grade middle school math teacher.

My methods of tutoring include demonstrating different methods to work through math problems. I then do a math problem so that student can see how the problem is worked. Then, I work with the student on a couple of problems. After going through multiple problems, I have the student work some through on his/her own. This shows me if they understand how to work through the problem. I am also able to see what part of solving the problem the student may struggle with.

I like to try different methods of working with math problems and I try my best to make problems relevant to the student.

Algebra 1

Algebra is one of my favorite subjects. I currently work with 8th grade students, some of which are in Algebra. I assist students on the problems they are stuck on and I try to introduce different ways of teaching it that the teacher may have not used. I like to try to make Algebra more fun and relate it to the student.

Algebra 2

Algebra has to be my favorite subject out of all math topics. I recently helped tutor a family friend in Algebra 2 for 3 months. It was great to watch him grow and see him understand the material. I like the "I do, we do, you do" method. This means that I do an example, we do a couple together, and then the student does problems on his/her own. This way, I can pinpoint which step in Algebra the student is struggling with.

Geometry

I am quite fluent in basic Geometry. I have little methods to help memorize different formulas. These are most effective with younger students but helpful to all.

Prealgebra

I love prealgebra the most out of any math subject. Last year, I was an aide for two students. One of them struggled with prealgebra. I tutored him during study hall to help him understand the material. I also help out in an after school study hall sometimes and assisted students with prealgebra. I have a teaching degree and am certified to teach math at the middle school level, which includes prealgebra. I scored high on my ACT, especially in math.

Reading

I am currently a reading interventionist and help students that struggle with comprehension and fluency. I am well versed in several interventions and know how to assist students in varying areas of reading.

Phonics

I am currently a reading interventionist in Channahon. I help students that struggle with reading and comprehension. This includes helping students with phonics. I have worked with a student with dyslexia and know which programs work best. I know plenty of resources that can be used to teach phonics and would also be happy to teach the parents basic practice activities that they can work on with their student.
