I became an English teacher because I loved reading. As a result, my love of reading has always been something students in my high school classes picked up from me. Also, I enjoy writing. I am very skilled in teaching people how to organize their thoughts on paper. I am also a person who loves to write fiction. Therefore, I can help people tell stories with skill and feeling.

However, the greatest fear of most students is giving a speech. I was the head speech team coach for most of my 35 year teaching career. Often, my students went from a state of fear to a state of confidence.

As a result, when I travel through nearby communities, I enjoy meeting my former students. Entering adulthood, they appreciate the care and expertise I displayed while helping them improve their writing skills, their interest in reading, and their confidence when speaking in front of classmates and other audiences.

Reading

My enjoyment of reading is one of the factors that led me toward becoming an English teacher.
The joys and skills that allow a person to become an effective reader were stressed throughout my long and productive teaching career.

From freshmen through seniors, my students successfully improved their ability to write everything from single paragraphs to complex term papers. Early in my career as an English teacher, I began to take courses in Special Education so I could increase my ability to reach more of my students. Shortly thereafter, my wife and I adopted a son, who turned out to be autistic.
