My tutoring experiences began during my undergraduate career and transcended during my post-graduate experiences. Initially, I started tutoring my classmates and peers while I was enrolled in organic chemistry and later realized I enjoyed this aspect within the learning process. Upon completion of the course, enrolled in the college tutoring program and become an official university tutor for NC State University. I tutored the following subjects including general and organic chemistry and biology I and II. My junior year is where I was allowed to apply and further my knowledge and philosophy of tutoring and teaching. I was hired as the youngest organic and general chemistry teaching assistant. These experiences improved my communication skills towards a larger audience and allowed the opportunity to develop methods of conveying difficult information in a effective manner. Senior year is where I was allowed to develop skills towards the position of Senior SI leader for organic chemistry which I was accepted for during my post-graduate status. Supplemental instruction involved the aspect of creating review sessions and additional materials towards improving the students chance of being successful.
My tutoring style concentrates around the concept of creating independence within the student. Through my interactions with the student, I want to instill methods of critical thinking and attaining confidence within the subject. I assistant the student in understanding how to utilize their resources including the professor, their peers, and finally textbook materials. While improving their study methods, I cover each of the areas of concern within the subject matter. During each of these sessions, I want to combine general effective methods of studying with answering questions the student has for that period.
