In high school, I excelled in both math and science. As a junior, I headed a student run organization in my school (through the Mu Alpha Theta club) to tutor students in math in preparation for the FCAT (Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test). When I began college, I chose to focus on my interests in science over math, but I continued tutoring math for some time through Kaplan Test Prep where I worked with high school students who were preparing for their SAT or ACT. As an undergraduate, I worked with my school, Towson University, tutoring peers in various entry-level to advanced biology and chemistry topics. In all of these experiences, I worked mostly one on one (but up to groups of five) which allowed me to conform my teaching methods to the student. Finally, over the last 4 months since I moved to the Chicago area, I have tutored numerous students in subjects from ACT math (over 100 hours in the past two months) to geometry and algebra II / trigonometry, and high school biology to college level organic chemistry.
I am quite flexible as a teacher, depending on what the student requires since every student is different! I can be laid back or strict, but I am always well organized and focused on the subject at hand. In my experiences, I have learned how to gauge what a student needs to succeed and I always strive to provide him or her with just that. I am comfortable teaching students of all ages and subjects of all levels.
I graduated with a BS in Biology (with minor in chemistry) and, since then, have taken some independent masters level biology courses at San Diego State University, so I have a very firm background in biology. I recently took the GRE and passed the quantitative section with flying colors (and I even 'tutored' my husband for the math portion of his GMAT) so I can assure you that I am well prepared to teach math subjects as well. Based on my background and GRE scores, I have been accepted into a PhD program for Molecular and Cellular Biology program beginning Fall 2013. Furthermore, I look forward to a career in teaching high school or college level sciences, so I would love the opportunity to work with you to broaden my own experience as well as your knowledge. It is because of my extensive experience and love of the subject matter that I believe I would be a perfect fit for you and your tutoring needs!
I look forward to meeting and working with you soon,
Jennifer
