I have been a teaching assistant in a middle school setting for 6 years. I work with students in the reading department doing interventions for fluency and comprehension skills. I also have classroom experience in literature, science and history. I have also raised a daughter with autism who is now in high school and in regular classes with a 3.2 GPA. I still assist her with her work and am familiar with high school work as well. I have written a book about autism and am preparing to speak at a few upcoming events. Prior to becoming a teaching assistant I worked in the electronics industry, video game industry and newspaper industry. I have proofreading experience, copy writing experience and often help students understand why they are learning the things they are learning and how they can be applied to real world situations. I have also worked with special needs children in a religious education program and also worked for SEDOL for a school year. If your child thinks differently or needs explanation on how to understand the literature he/she is reading, I like to bring in real world situations and will often use the internet or other ways of explaining to get the message across. I am proficient in Word and PowerPoint and can also help your student with composing and typing papers or presentations. I look forward to helping your student.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Autism

I have raised a daughter with autism. At age three she could only navigate life with a picture schedule. Through OT/PT and speech therapy, countless hours of reading a preparation she is now 16 and mainstreamed completely in high school. She has gone to Europe on her own (with school for class credit) and is planning on going to college.

I have worked with many children of various ages with autism and Aspergers.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been a teaching assistant in a middle school setting for 6 years. Although I am currently working with 7th graders, I have worked with 2nd-4th grade special education students. I feel that I have the skills associated with the lower grades since I am assisting students at the 7th grade level. I also did many study guides and adaptations for my daughter with autism when she was in K-6th and have kept most of the flash cards and study guides I used with her throughout these grades.

Public Speaking

I have experience with Public Speaking as I was a marketing manager who used to give speeches to rooms of 100+ people. I also have helped students prepare speeches for classes and put together their power points. I recently took a college level public speaking class to utilize all the current technology and have various rubrics to work with.

Reading

I have experience with history, science and literature text as well as the skills required for inferencing, prediction, main idea, supporting detail and writing essays and term papers.

I can work on your student's homework, or bring in additional work sheets to help improve their skills.

Study Skills

In my current position as teaching assistant one of my duties is to come up with study guides to help students with IEP's and who are in interventions. I have developed U.S. and Illinois Constitution Study Guides, Science Study Guides and History Study Guides. I also work with students in reading their novels and helping them with understanding content and vocabulary.

As I am getting my own college bound Senior ready for applications, tests, and essays, I find myself realizing how important an extensive vocabulary can be to help with all the preparations.   For a student with a 504 Plan or an I.E.P., advanced vocabulary can be a real challenge on standardized tests.  For many students, so much time has been spent on study skills and reading... read more

Okay, it is almost the 4th of July and you and the kids are already bored! It has been rainy, or too hot, or too buggy....you know all the excuses. So here are 5 things I suggest to get over the summer slump: 1. Summer is here - the kids could not wait until they could have their summer days with no homework or a schedule and suddenly they are bored. Don't let the summer slide hit your kids this summer. The best way to keep them engaged in learning without them thinking they are learning is to develop a summer learning unit.
