I think a tutor is just as much of a coach as a teacher. I believe that the schools are full of students who have mathematical ability, but they lack the confidence to "do" math. If I can get a pupil's confidence up, that is most of the battle.

I don't believe in giving students the answers, but asking the right questions to guide them to the answers. Practice is important. Lots of practice seems to be a passe concept now, but on the contrary, I believe it is essential for learning mathematics.

I am a graduate of Northern Illinois University and I am an Illinois state-certified teacher.

Algebra 1

I have school-taught Algebra 1 to both 7th and 8th graders and to both accelerated students and non-accelerated students.

Also, on the State Certification Test for Mathematics, I scored a 295 out of 300 on the "Algebraic Patterns, Symbols, & Functions" area of the exam and 291 out of 300 overall.

Algebra 2

I have taught accelerated and non-accelerated Algebra in school. Of all the disciplines in Mathematics, Algebra comes easiest and most naturally to me. While many subjects in school leave one after a while, Algebra has always stuck with me.

Geometry

In college, I took three semesters of Analytic Geometry along with Calculus.

Prealgebra

I have school-taught Pre-Algebra to both accelerated students and non-accelerated students. Last Fall, six of my non-accelerated students were transferred to accelerated Pre-Algebra.

Accounting

I have a Associates of Applied Science degree in Accounting and I am a certified teacher for grades 6th through 12th.

Economics

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Math with a minor in Economics. I have taken classes in Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Monetary Policy, International, Urban and Environmental Economics. I worked many years in the insurance industry with the most recent role of Financial Analyst.
