Thanks for reading, I'm working on my second career teaching secondary math, physics and general sciences. I have over 3 decades in the software industry and have learned patience and have a strong set of listening skills. I graduated Cum Laude from DePauw University with a BA in Computer Science before starting my software career. Since then, I've completed additional requirements for teaching in Illinois from Phoenix online and National University with courses in Linear Algebra, Modern Geometry, Abstract Algebra, Number Theory, Statistics and Biology. I've also completed the licensure portion of a Master of Arts in Teaching from National Louis University. I will complete the MAT program by June.
I've worked in a volunteer capacity with teens for the past 10 years and have loved every minute of it. That experience is why I gave up my software industry career to teach. I just finished my student teaching in pre-algebra, which I've thoroughly enjoyed. I've had numerous opportunities to work one-on-one with students during my student teaching. I feel my listening skills, content knowledge and need for students to guide their learning has made each of these opportunities a reward for me and successful for my students. Throughout my own education, I tutored my peers. In middle and high school, this was all informal but in college I did part of my work-study tutoring. Though my recent work has been with middle and high school aged teens, I'm happy to work with students of all ages, elementary through college.
My tutoring and teaching goal is not only to ensure students understand how to solve the problems at hand but understand why. I strive to make the material fun and enjoyable, relating to the student where they are currently. I prefer to get to know my students to understand what they like and do outside of studying and school. As an undergraduate, I had a 200 level course called Discrete Mathematics. It included set theory, fundamental probability theory, boolean algebra, number theory, combinatorics and graph and network theory. I later took a 400 level reading course in Operations Research, which delved much deeper into network theory and used the fundamentals of linear programming. In the past two years, I've had courses in Linear Algebra and Abstract Algebra which deal with some of the same theories under the Discrete Math umbrella.
