I am using Wyzant to promote my name and experience, though I have prior independent tutoring experience and can provide referrals upon request. My overall goal as a tutor is to develop study skills and increase student confidence.
Overview of Tutoring Expertise:
I am passionate about reading and writing instruction through 12th grade; however, I enjoy teaching all subjects at the elementary level. When working with elementary school students on Language Arts, I enjoy using games, projects, and high-interest literature to teach sight words, vocabulary, grammar, reading fluency, and writing skills. At my first tutoring session with new clients at this age, I administer an interest survey and various literacy assessments (such as Running Records with a comprehension component, spelling inventories, writing samples, fluency assessments). This information helps me plan engaging lessons, choose on-level literature for instruction, and assign developmentally appropriate homework. It also helps me determine student improvement over time. I always ask parents/guardians to provide teacher contact information and fill out an initial questionnaire outlining client goals and expectations. When working with middle school and high school students, I work alongside my students on homework assignments from school. I enjoy helping students with text annotation, essay writing, and research projects.
I will either drive to tutoring sessions, or provide tutoring in my home.
