My passion for teaching piano, voice, guitar and bass comes from my passion for communicating. I am a performing artist with a 30+ year career in front of audiences of all ages, all over the world. Currently I teach at Guitar Center Studio in Highland Park and Gand Music in Northbrook. In the past, I was on the faculty at The Old Town School of Folk Music and City Colleges Of Chicago. Setting and reaching goals are foremost in my teaching style. I like to make a 'contract' with the students that spells out what they expect from me and what I expect from them. American History

I minored in history in college, and it has remained one of my major intellectual pursuits. I have an extensive history library,especially anything related to the Civil War and World Wars I and II.

My approach to teaching history is to find a period in which we can explore in all aspects, accompanied by a biographical approach to the people, both great and small, who lived during that period. There are also many films that are helpful in grasping the essence of eras and great events.

Writing

I'm a published author of poetry, fiction, essays, method books (music), and journalism. Currently, I am a columnist for Chicago Jazz Magazine. My method is to improve speech, and then capture the student's voice on the written page.

ESL/ESOL

I use theater games and newspapers, along with television and videos; anything to put the language into context. I taught at City College of Chicago and for private companies where I went to factories and taught industrial English to workers. I am a trained actor as well as a teacher, so I include a lot of gesture and affect in my teaching.

World History

I minored in history and have a passion for the subject. I'm especially good at creating impressionistic accounts of historic people based on vast reading and an actor's imagination.

SAT Reading

I scored very high on my SAT reading section, and I think I can help others improve their scores. I have a degree in English, and am a published author and teacher with decades of experience in the classroom and one-on-one. Please complete the payment info so I can offer you a free trial meeting.

Philosophy

While majoring in English at The U. of I./Chicago, I became interested in philosophy as literature. Any of the great philosophers (i.e., Rousseau, Berkeley, Hobbes, Mill, Spencer, Russell, Sartre, to name a few) were also great prose stylists. I'm also very fond of and well-read in history, and philosophy can also be taught as a history of ideas.

ACT Reading

I was a high scorer on my ACT, especially in English-related areas. My method is to use sample tests from ACT literature, supplemented with the close reading of newspapers and magazines that the student is interested in.

ACT English

The best way to take a test is to be familiar with the format and learn to think in a manner suited for that test.It's no use cramming for multiple test questions, but it's very helpful to take lots of dummy tests and learn the weak spots in your general knowledge. Elementary Science

I have a good grasp of the general principles of science,having studied the philosophy of science in college as a part of my minor in philosphy. My interest in mainly in physics and geology, though I'm aquainted with other branches of science.

Composition (Music)

I've been a professional musician all of my adult life. I've created original material for 4 albums, and have arranged many tunes for piano, voice and orchestra.I have a good grasp of popular, jazz and classical modes of composition. I'm also a lyricist. In my approach,I try to bring out the composing 'voice' in my students.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am currently director of the after-school music enrichment program, where I also substitute for all grades. I have decades of classroom and one-on-one teaching experience with children.

General Music

I'm a professional musician and teacher, with more than 30 years of international experience. I have four albums or original material to my credit and am a member of ASCAP. My main instrument is piano, though I'm a competent singer, guitarist, bassist and drummer as well.

Guitar

I'm a professional musician with over 30 years experience on a variety of instruments. As a guitarist, I'm competent to teach basic all the way to professional level for blues, folk, rock and jazz styles.

Music History

During my six years of study at The American Conservatory and continued education at the University of Illinois, I became very interested in the history of music. Piano

My 30 + years of experience as a performer and teacher makes me an ideal piano instructor for all ages, all levels, all styles.

Voice (Music)

I am a professional singer and teacher, with over 30 years of performing and recording experience in 9 countries. I live and teach in Glenview, but I make house calls. Currently director of an after-school music program at a local school.

Songwriting

I am a published songwriter (with four CDs of original material) and a member of ASCAP. My studies at The American Conservatory included composition and harmony, so I have a strong classical background as well as an appreciation for all types of popular music.

Drums

I've been a professional musician for all of my adult life. Drums was my first instrument, and I continue to play and teach for the instrument. I use everything from Indian hand drums to electronic drum machines. My method is appropriate for beginners as well as advanced students of all instruments wishing to get a better understand of rhythm.

Public Speaking

I've been onstage most of my life, have trained at Second City and Zanies, in addition to many hours of drama classes and thousands of hours onstage as an entertainer. I am also a teacher of several subjects that require a strong public speaking persona.

Film

I studied film theory in college, and have had a love affair with cinema ever since. I see several films a week, and subscribe to a variety of film journals. Every year I try to participate in a film festival, and am planning on attending next year's festival in Toronto. I own an extensive library of film books, and pride myself on a deep knowledge and appreciation of American and world cinema.
