I have 27 years of teaching experience in early and elementary education. I have taught preschool for twenty years as well as 3rd - 6th grade for 7 years on the North Shore. Teaching is my passion and I have many tricks and activities to make learning fun. I am proficient in all subject areas but reading and writing are my favorites. I believe all children have the capacity to learn. It is the teacher's responsibility to help the students discover the methods and strategies that utilize their individual strengths and teach them to apply these tools to their educational needs. I help children identify their learning styles and then adapt my teaching methods accordingly. All children learn at a different pace and understanding is built upon the mastery of basic skills. It is important that children master the basics before they can successfully move to the next skill level. I spend time reviewing and re-learning the basics. For the past year, I have been tutoring children PreK - 6th grade with remedial and enrichment lessons. I have also helped them with organization, homework, projects, reading with understanding, taking notes, and preparing for tests.
I hold a current Illinois teaching certificate - Type 3, K-9
I have taught phonics in the classroom during my 26 years as an elementary and early childhood teacher as well as when I have tutored children individually or in small group settings. I start initially with the consonants and we work on the identification of the letter and the sound each letter makes. We learn to listen for the sound in vocabulary words and reading assignments. We list words that begin or end with that sound. When consonants have been mastered, we then move to vowels and blends.
I incorporate many visuals, auditory tapes, games, and activities in my approach.
I specialized in special education while earning my college degree. I spent my college years working with mentally and physically disabled children in a residential home. I have many years of experience teaching children with various learning disabilities in the classroom. I have experience with ADD, ADHD, Autism, Sensory Integration, Dyslexia, Learning Disabilities, and Occupational Disabilities. I am familiar with many educational aids and I have lots of material geared to teaching and reinforcing basic skills.
In order to learn spelling skills, a child must have strong phonics skills and good sight word recognition. I teach spelling with phonics and reading. I incorporate games, early "learning to read" books, flash cards, and creative writing activities to teach and reinforce spelling skills. I teach the student strategies for remembering spelling rules. When writing,I encourage children to initially get their thoughts on paper and then go back to edit their spelling. With the older children, I have them practice using references such as a dictionary to check their spelling.
Study skills require developing organizational skills. I have worked with children who struggle with study skills to incorporate assignment notebooks & special binders for organizing their work, teach them steps for gathering important information, utilize a writing web for organizing thoughts and ideas, and given them concrete suggestions for breaking down assignments and material. It is important for students to learn how to retrieve the main idea and identify the major points of topics in textbooks.
Vocabulary is developed over time. Initially, children are taught sight words and words recognizable from their environment. Eventually vocabulary develops as they learn to use these words. I use grade level word lists to help children increase their vocabulary. A child's vocabulary also increases the more he/she reads books. I utilize reading selections to present new vocabulary words and to check for word meaning. I have numerous activities for learning new words and building vocabulary. Many of my strategies involve using hands-on manipulatives and reading selected passages. I also use grade level word lists to
Writing involves planning and organizing thoughts, sentence structure, punctuation, and spelling. I teach children to use a special format like a writing web, for organizing their writing. I also teach them to break-down writing assignments into several steps. Each step must be completed before moving on to the next step. This process helps organize ideas as well as teach children to proofread their work. Phonics and spelling must also be practiced and reviewed before children can achieve success with their writing. Older children should be taught how to use a thesaurus. Often children feel overwhelmed when given a writing assignment. I try to make writing enjoyable and fun by using clever story starters for practice writing.
