I am a High School English teacher and have observed my students feeling underprepared for college and the ACT. In order to address high schooler's and their parents' concerns, I have developed a regimented system and strategies that help my students feel prepared mentally for the ACT, as well as improve their scores drastically!
My ACT program: The first session is a diagnostic test. Your child will take a practice ACT test with authentic timing measures in place. I will then score and analyze any missed questions in order to develop a an individualized plan for your child. Plans are created with the student's goal score in mind. On average, scores increase 2 points per 4 hour sessions. I communicate with parents heavily through the planning stages in order to completely understand financial, scheduling, and all other concerns.
After the individualized plan has been created, lessons begin. I prefer to tutor at libraries because these environments replicate the testing situation. However, due to schedules and conveniences, I have also tutored at Starbucks, Panera, or parks in order to meet a student's availability. When I create plans, the first few sessions are one hour sessions in order to create a foundation. However, after the first few sessions, sessions are two hours (unless of course there are extenuating circumstances). I have all the materials, I just request students to come to sessions with an open mind :)
My College Prep Program: Applying for college is extremely nerve wracking - for students as well as parents! College advisors have 100s of students to advise, and often students feel overlooked and under-attended. This does not happen with my students because I limit the amount of students I take on within a semester. I assist students in searching for specific colleges, applying for financial aid, applications, and personal statements. My approach with this program is flexible dependent upon student availability. I usually assist students at libraries due to their resources. If a student has a personal laptop, I highly recommend the student brings this to tutoring sessions, especially for personal statement tutoring.
**I uphold a 24-hour cancellation policy, but I offer makeup sessions.**
As Helen Keller once said, "Together we can do so much." I look forward to hearing from you!
