Wisdom in teaching begins with the realization that most people learn in ways that suit them personally. The trick is to find a comfortable match between the learner and the goal. When I was younger I was a Montessori teacher; and that experience has marked my college teaching and my tutoring with adults. I've lived abroad in Naples and farther north on the far side of the Alps, and am often mistaken as a native speaker of Italian or German by Italians and Germans. My advanced degrees are in sociology and psychology, which I've taught at the University of Illinois and elsewhere. I'm easy to work with: down-to-earth, supportive. I'd be happy to give you a hand.

Vocabulary

When I was in sixth grade, one of my classmates said, "You know what the trouble is with you, Mike? The words you use... Nobody knows what you're saying!" In high school it just got worse. On my SAT verbals, I came perilously close to a perfect score. That might have been part of what got me into Yale. I'd be delighted to help you advance along your own path to expression.

French

I studied French as a college student at Yale, and have used the language professionally on many occasions. I trained as a Montessori teacher, and led a two-way bilingual program, French-English. It was wonderful. I'd be happy to give you a hand.

German

When I was fourteen I lived with a family in Tutzing am Starnberger See south of Munich in the foothills of the Alps. It was only a few weeks, but I was hooked on German. You might be, too. That's what it takes. I've enjoyed both family and professional ties with people "drueben" ("over there") over the years; and I've learned lots and lots of German. You can, too!

Spanish

I founded and then for twenty years directed a two-way bilingual Montessori school where more than half of the teachers and many of the parents were native speakers of Spanish. I've mentored new bilingual teachers for the Chicago Public Schools, and have consulted in federally funded pre-school and after-school programs in predominantly Spanish-speaking neighborhoods (Chicago Teachers' Center, Northeastern Illinois University). Studied Italian, sociology and psychology at Yale. Worked at the Istituto di Psicologia at the University of Naples. I speak Italian to our cat, Fritz. (Hey, Francis of Assisi spoke Italian to all sorts of animals!)

SAT Reading

I did exceptionally well on my SAT verbal, perilously close to a perfect score, and high enough for Yale (college and later grad school, all the way through the Ph.D.). In the years since, I've taught lots of classes, assigned a lot of college-level reading, and have corrected lots and lots of college students' papers and exams. I can give you a hand!

Sociology

I have a B.A., M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. in sociology and psychology (interdisciplinary program, Yale). In 1972 I graduated magna cum laude and won that year's "best senior thesis" designation: "honors in sociology". That senior thesis was later accepted as my Master's thesis, so I guess I'd gotten the hang of things by then.
