I love working with young people and sharing the passion I have for learning about the English language
! One of the most important subjects in school is English. Reading
confidently are imperative for strong communication skills in adulthood. I am energetic, patient, comfortable with kids of all ages, and so excited to help!
Details of my current availability are listed at the end.
In college, I majored in Writing/Literature
/Publishing, a special program combining elements of all three subjects in one. I took workshop classes in creative fiction and poetry writing, so I know how to critique and guide creative writing. Literature classes required intense analysis and comparisons of literary works, both classical and contemporary. I gained a lot of practice writing academic essays, and I genuinely enjoy writing them! I am so excited to help guide students through academic essay
-writing. Publishing courses ranged from book design to a course entirely on proofreading
, where we perfected our skills of poring over articles to find the one missing letter in a misspelled word. I know the Chicago Manual of Style and MLA Handbook backwards, and I can proofread and copy edit efficiently, once essays are finished!
In addition to reading and writing, I spend most of my spare time involved in photography
. I worked for Emerson College as a PR photographer, taking photos for the website, publications, and for local newspapers such as the Boston Globe. I am comfortable with all Canon and Nikon models, and I love sharing what I know about photography. There is an artist inside everyone, and I think it's important for young people to find and cultivate their creativity early. Creativity applies to all subjects--it leads to better problem-solving skills in math
, and contributes to overall health and happiness, because we all need a way to express ourselves. It's our nature!
At Emerson College, I minored in American Sign Language
, and I am comfortable helping students practice signing and carrying on conversations (but I am not qualified to teach it separately). I am also comfortable using and assisting with many common computer
programs, including the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel
, and Powerpoint
), the iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote), Aperture, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe InDesign
, and iMovie. I may not be the best candidate to exclusively teach the best use of these programs, but I would be able to assist with projects involving the software listed. I am comfortable with both Macs and PCs.
I will be moving from the Bay Area in California to Evanston, IL in June 2015 to begin a Masters in Education program at Northwestern. I'm so excited to start this major step on my path of education. Ever since starting my tutoring practice, I've fallen in love with teaching. Starting in late June, I'll be accepting new clients in the Evanston area! Summer is a perfect opportunity to work on lessons that didn't quite sink in during the school year, get a jump start on next year, or just have someone to read with! My rates are flexible depending on the intensity of the curriculum I'll be putting together. Want your student to chat about a new book each week or so? I'll design a reading list based on his or her interests, and meet for $15/week! Does your student need to work on some spelling
, reading, or writing issues? I can design a personalized, flexible curriculum for the summer, to help set goals, push limits, and improve confidence. Are you personally looking for a reading buddy? (Me too!) I would be happy to tack on a friendly "book club" meeting each week!
I look forward to meeting you!
