I have been teaching Spanish at the college and high school levels at schools such as DePaul University, North Park College and Loyola Academy for 16 years and have a PhD in Hispanic Literature from the University of Texas at Austin. Moreover, I hold a Bilingual Type 29 teaching certificate from the State of Illinois.
My tutoring students have met with success, including one at New Trier who went from a C last year to an A this year, and another who was getting Ds on his exams and who now consistently gets 90s on assessments and who received a B on the mid-term exam.
Currently I am enrolled at Northeastern Illinois University in the Education program, which has required that my background (using fingerprints) be checked twice in the last 12 months.
Along with Spanish, I enjoy teaching math to girls, especially Pre-Algebra and Algebra, because I like to show them that women ARE good at math.
Standardized tests have been easy for me to take and explain, and I have received very high scores on many standardized tests (GRE, SAT, ACT, Basic Skills, etc.) For example, when I took the Basic Skills test I scored a perfect 300 in both Math and Writing. Because I have taken that teaching exam, I enjoy tutoring potential teachers and social workers for the TAP test.

Currently I am taking a Literacy class at Northeastern Illinois University to learn the best and most recent methods for teaching reading. I am also a volunteer reading fluency tutor for the District 65 schools (Evanston/Skokie). My methods of teaching reading include choosing a topic of very high interest to the student, and also ensuring that the book is the correct level. Research shows that reading a book where more than 5% of the words are unknown causes frustration.
