I have ten years of experience in tutoring Math in Harper College and lecturing in Northwestern University. My former students were of different ages, nationalities, and levels of mathematical skills. All of them significantly improved their mathematical knowledge and grades.

Yuri’s subjects

Algebra 1

I hold a PhD in mathematics and physics and tutor a lot of high school and college students during the last 10 years. The list of subjects includes various mathematical disciplines, in particular Algebra 1.

During the sessions I check whether a student understands key algebraic concepts and explain them if there is a gap in the student's mathematical knowledge. I also eliminate any confusion that a student can have and develop his/her mathematical skills if necessary. Usually this strategy gives excellent results and typically a student improves his/her grades by 1-2 letters after 3-4 sessions.

Algebra 2

I hold a PhD in mathematics and physics and tutor a lot of high school and college students during the last 10 years. The list of subjects includes various mathematical disciplines, in particular Algebra 2. During the sessions I check whether a student knows the basics of Algebra 2 and explain those algebraic ideas, which a student does not understand. This solid foundation allows a student to avoid any confusion that otherwise a student can have and develop his/her mathematical skills. Usually this strategy gives excellent results already after 3-4 sessions, so that typically a student improves his/her grades by 1-2 letters.

Calculus

I work at Northwestern University holding PhD in mathematics and physics. My tutoring experience (I am tutoring almost 10 years) clearly shows that the learning style and the ability to simplify subjects are truly important for the student’s progress in Calculus. In addition, it is very significant to know several mathematical tricks. I teach these simple tricks that make it easier to do the entire calculations or to check their various stages. I also work with all of my students on their ability to simplify mathematical problems as well as on their organizational and study habits. These skills are vital for learning Calculus. Sometimes insufficient knowledge of other mathematical disciplines creates series obstacles for the student’s progress in Calculus. During the sessions I try to clarify and eliminate such obstacles. The above strategy allows the significant improvement in Calculus scores of students after a few tutoring sessions.

Differential Equations

I have tutored differential equations to college students for about 10 years. Taking into account that this mathematical subject serves as a foundation and the powerful analytical tool for many scientific disciplines including physics, engineering, chemical and biological kinetics, I concentrated on practical applications of differential equations. In particular, during the sessions my students have a lot of fun realizing how these equations can be used to describe such seemingly distinct processes as heat propagation diffusion of chemical reagents, harmonic motion of the oscillating spring, evolution of genetic populations and others. I also use these examples to develop students’ skills in solving differential equations by various methods, particularly by iterative integration, separation of variables, by method of undetermined coefficients, by the Laplace transform, etc.

Geometry

I am a research professor at Northwestern University with PhD degree in mathematics and physics. In addition, I teach various mathematical subjects, including Geometry and tutor a lot of high school and college students since 2002. I successfully teach my students how to manipulate with angles, triangles, equations of lines, how they can calculate perimeter and an area of 2-dimensional shapes as well as a volume of 3-dimensional objects. My emphasis is to concentrate on the hard topics and make this topic simple and easy for students. To do this, I try to use examples and computer-generated illustrations. As a result, spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills are developed, so that typically my students improve their grades by 1-2 letters after 3-4 sessions on average.

Prealgebra

I hold a PhD in mathematics and physics and tutor students of different levels and knowledge during the last 10 years. The list of subjects includes various mathematical disciplines, in particular Prealgebra, which provides the foundation of many other areas of mathematics. Taking this into account, the lessons are focused on systematic study of Prealgebra with the subsequent testing the student’s understanding of the material by doing special exercises. This allows student to avoid any confusion and to develop his/her algebraic skills efficiently. As a result, a student typically improves his grades by 1-2 letters after 3-4 sessions.

Precalculus

I hold a PhD in mathematics and physics and tutor many high school and college students during the last 10 years. The mathematical subjects include various mathematical disciplines, in particular Precalculus. The latter prepares students for a first course in Calculus, as well as introducing topics that will be needed in other Mathematics courses. For these reasons, I focus on teaching main concepts of Precalculus in simple and clear way. In addition, I spend some time to check that students are not confused and have a clear understanding of basic concepts of this mathematical subject. In other words, if you are having difficulty in Precalculus and need a person to explain the concepts in ways that will solidify your understanding, develop your skills and renew your confidence - look no further!

Trigonometry

I hold a PhD in mathematics and physics and tutored a lot of high school and college students during the last 10 years. Based on my experience, I developed many effective methods to understand trigonometric functions and to perform mathematical operations with them. The effectiveness of these methods has already been successfully proved by the great progress of my former students. During the tutoring sessions I always try to demonstrate that actually trigonometry is one of the simplest mathematical discipline, which becomes easy for students only if they understand basic definitions. To prove simplicity of trigonometry, diagrams and geometrical analogies are widely used. Usually this gives excellent results: typically my students improve their grades by 1-2 letters after 3-4 sessions on average.

Grateful to have Yuri's support and academic intelligence. — This is what happens when your tutor is a knowledgeable perfectionist: My son had experienced few tutors, from "tell me what is your homework" to "I have to review before I can explain it." Although there are many good talented Calculus and Higher Math tutors in this market, Yuri's approach to teaching most complex concepts is truly unique - making it comprehensible and making sure that my son co ...
