Personal and Professional Reading, Writing, Math and Test prep

I enjoyed a 20 year career in business while teaching in Hebrew school part-time. In 2011, I completed my Masters in Secondary Education and hold an Illinois Type 9, teaching certificate with an endorsement in business. I am on staff as a substitute at Evanston Township High School, I taught summer school this past summer and have been invited to teach next summer as well. In Illinois all teachers are required to pass a background check.

I have over 15 years of experience teaching teens. I believe that every student can learn, and I approach every student with genuine caring and respect. I work to foster the "yes I can" belief in students and guide them toward their best. I try to customize every lesson to the student and use his or her life experiences to help him or her understand and process the concepts and skills. My students know that I truly care how well they do and how well I do in teaching them skills and building confidence. The ACT students I have worked with performed, on average, 15% better after 10 hours of lessons.

While I have not pursued a degree or specialty in special education, I have had significant success with students who have been diagnosed with ADD, dyslexia and emotional disorders. I welcome the opportunity to work one-on-one with special needs students.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is built by reading effectively. I teach reading skills, writing skills and good study habits to build vocabulary.

General Computer

Students in elementary school are already exposed to and taught to use a variety of computer programs. Understanding the terminology and basics of computing will take the mystery out and replace it with effectiveness and confidence.

I have taught keyboarding, introduction to computing, and introduction to using office programs to students from grade school to senior citizens.

Reading

I teach active reading methods that have proven success in achieving 10%+ better reading comprehension scores on tests as well as in general studies. Students learn to take appropriate notes while reading and use those notes to answer questions. Reading comprehension improves from the first session.

TOEFL

Learning to speak, read, and write and English with confidence is challenging. Using a variety of methods I can teach reading comprehension to non-native speakers enabling them to overcome any weaknesses and pass TOEFL.

ACT Reading

I teach students methods for approaching the Reading Comprehension section of the ACT that are valuable skills in every reading based class. I have specific methods that work for ADD and dyslexic as well as those who simply need to read more effectively.

ACT English

Reviewing sentence, paragraph and overall article structure, punctuation, word usage and transitions I teach methods that have proven success in achieving 10%+ better reading comprehension scores on the ACT.

Study Skills

As a teacher for over 15 years I have observed and strengthened study skills in my students by organizing my lessons and giving good directions. I show students how to learn efficiently by demonstrating how and where to focus their attention, subject by subject, book by book. I also incorporate techniques from ACT prep and various special needs areas to help each individual become a better student.

Religion

I have over 15 years of experience teaching Jewish religion, Hebrew, Talmud, Torah in Chicago area synagogues affiliated with the conservative movement. I have completed teacher training and attend annual seminars offered by the Board of Jewish Education and the Chicago Federation for Jewish Education, and I am a Melton graduate.

Hebrew

I lived in Israel and studied Hebrew in classes designed for new immigrants. In addition, I have been teaching in a local synagogue for over 15 years teaching various subjects including elementary level Hebrew. I am proficient in reading, writing and conversational Hebrew. I am also knowledgeable in prayer and religious texts.

Business

I hold a type 9 certification in Illinois with a Business education endorsement, after completing my masters of secondary education. My BS is Business Administration with a management and economics dual major.
