My name is Amy. I have taught 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades for six years in a variety of school settings. I have taught in Chicago public schools, New Haven, CT public schools, Greenwich, CT public schools, and a small progressive private school outside of Seattle. I have a Masters in Education from Northwestern University.

I am currently staying home with my son, however I miss my students! I would like to help out families that are looking for either academic support or enrichment for their children. I have tutored students from 1st through 4th grade in reading, writing, organizational skills, math, enrichment activities, problem solving, time management, test taking skills, vocabulary/spelling and phonics. I am trained in both the Everyday Math and Singapore Math curriculum. I am trained in balanced literacy and I use research-based techniques to help your child become a more fluent reader.

I am a fun, encouraging and supportive teacher who loves to help children succeed and feel better about themselves. I like to challenge them in ways that I know will help them grow emotionally, socially and academically. I am not ready to go back to teaching full time yet, however I would like to put all of my teaching experience to use, and I think tutoring is the best way to do that.

I use a mix of different methods in my tutoring sessions - I really tailor it to what the child needs. I like to meet and talk with parents beforehand so that I know what they are looking for. I like to meet with the student and get to know them before I completely plan what we will be working on together. This way I can get a sense of their interests and abilities through a few informal questions and activities. I like to play games that teach skills so that the child can learn but can also have fun.

Grammar

I have taught grammar for 2nd-4th grade students using a variety of techniques including games and skill building. By the end of second grade, my class could diagram every piece of a sentence with the part of speech, and could discuss in detail how they knew what each part of the sentence was.

Reading

I have taught using a balanced literacy approach. I have been trained in the Fountas and Pinnell method of guided reading. I have been trained to assess students' reading levels with DRA and F&P systems. I have taught test-prep in reading comprehension for state exams.

Elementary Math

I have been extensively trained in the Everyday Math curriculum as well as Singapore Math. I have taught 2-4th grades for six years. I use manipulatives to help students understand math concepts, and I often play math "games" that teach specific skills. I have access to an enormous database of open-ended word problems that help students with problem solving and also help prepare them for the open-ended math problems on the ISAT.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades for a total of six years. I am certified to teach in CT and IL. I have taught in public and private schools. Phonics

I have been trained in Fountas and Pinnell's word study methods. I have taught phonics for a total of six years in grades 2-4. I have also used Words Their Way. I have been to word study trainings in both Chicago Public Schools and in New Haven (CT) public schools. I have taught word study in my classroom every day for six years.

Study Skills

I have taught 2nd to 4th grades for a total of six years. I have always worked with my students on study skills and feel that I have a strong background in helping students learn the best ways to study for different kinds of tests. I have also taught test prep in the classroom and in an intensive before school class for students needing extra help. I have also tutored in study skills and test prep help.
