Why I tutor/mentor: I derive great pleasure in helping others develop their skills and talents, overcome obstacles and achieve goals. I have traveled in Europe, Southeast Asia and, of course, America. I lived and studied in Florence, Italy, for a semester while in college. Afterwards I traveled throughout Europe and the calmer, safer parts of the Mideast (Israel and Egypt). In between careers, at the ripe old age of 30, I took a 6-month sabbatical and traveled throughout Southeast Asia. I am married to a lovely woman from Sweden. I am curious about the world, about different cultures and I very much enjoy meeting and helping people.
What makes me an effective tutor/mentor: I am 53 years old. I have a lot of life experience. I grew up in Dallas, Texas, went to college in Los Angeles and began my career in New York City. I have been a banker, an acquisitions guy for a film company, started my own business and been involved with commercial real estate. The common thread in all of these experiences is my interaction with people in a client service capacity. This requires active listening and providing solutions to problems and obstacles. Much like a tutoring relationship. I have enjoyed exposure to many different people and ideas. So, while I have specific job-related skills to bring to your table (or your child’s), these are accompanied by many “soft” skills (see below).
What makes me an effective service provider: I am focused on living a life of accountability, authenticity, compassion and generosity. This sounds good, and I am not perfect. But I am aware. Aware of the many layers of a person’s life, and how they might interact with and support (or inhibit) one another. This is especially true for children. My own upbringing has taught me the impact of a child's sphere of influence in their personal development. If I can provide a positive force then I have served my clients well. My understanding of sensitivity to a person's sphere of influence is an integral part of my toolkit and success.
I grew up playing baseball on long, hot summer days and nights in Dallas, Texas. I played on Pony League (I still have my first mitt - a Bob Middlefield G22 from the 50s), Little League, High School and American Legion Baseball teams and during my first year in college. At UCLA, I was the shortstop on our First-Place Intramural softball team.
With the exception of Catcher, I've played all the positions. I know the intricacies and nuances of each position, hitting and base running.
I coached a team of 15 and 16-year old boys in Evanston's Youth Summer Baseball League.
It would be great fun to pass this knowledge and love of the game on to any young boy or girl interested in improving their skills and understanding.

I began my career in New York City, working for Manufacturers Hanover Trust which, at the time, was the 4th largest bank in the country. After successfully completing their management training and credit analysis program, I chose to work with smaller businesses because I enjoyed the closer, direct relationship with business owners. As a commercial banker, I witnessed a lot of management and operating styles. I saw what worked and what didn't.
My banking career included commercial banking, leveraged buyouts and project finance.
I was hired away from New York City by a company that owned and operated movie theaters throughout the Midwest and Northwest. My job was to monitor our theater managers' performance, raise financing and seek acquisition candidates.
In my early 30s I began my own business and, over the course of 13 years, acquired two competitors and sold the combined company to another competitor. This gave me hands-on experience with the many aspects of running a business: marketing, financing, hiring, production, client management, new business development and leadership.
I understand the challenges and mind-set of being an owner, and appreciate the opportunities for personal and professional growth entrepreneurship offers.
I would find great joy in passing on any knowledge I have that might help another business owner avoid mistakes or a motivated employee to gain a deeper understanding of their role in an organization.

I have been involved in selling and marketing products and services for my entire working career. I have sold products in retail settings, financial products and services within financial institutions, commercial real estate services in person and over the phone, and technology solutions.
In each experience, it was my responsibility to a) understand the features, benefits and overall characteristics of the product or service I was marketing, b) identify target markets for whom the product or service is best suited, c) create and develop professional marketing materials with compelling reasons to purchase the product or service, and d) deliver those marketing materials either with an on-site presentation, over the phone or through mail/e-mail.
I have been promoted in all the positions I have been involved with, and became the top performer in my commercial real estate company within two years from a standing start (i.e. no advantages other than the marketing skills and character traits I possess). My performance surpassed peers with ten and twenty years of more experience than I.
I am a good marketer and can communicate ideas and concepts in a clear, concise and compelling manner.
My experience with Excel goes back 30 years to my first job as a commercial banker in New York City. I developed quite sophisticated spreadsheets to analyze cash flows for the ongoing operations of individual companies, the prospective purchase of a company by a competitor and the acquisition of a company by an investment group.
I recently taught the Excel program to associates in my commercial real estate brokerage business and am confident in my abilities to convey the concepts and functions this wonderfully effective program offers.
I would ask when inquiring of my services that you outline the use of the program you are most interested in. If for a new job, what will you be doing and what will you need to know? If for an exam, which one? The software is so comprehensive it would be a waste of your money and my time to spend it on irrelevant concepts.
