By writing well, you can advance your career, streamline your work, and better express your ideas. To help you achieve this, I can meet with you to workshop your writing and teach you to improve it. With practice, you will soon write clear, powerful prose.
When meeting one-on-one, we can address those parts of the writing process that you find most challenging. For example, we may address big-picture challenges – choosing good content, building a sound argument, and framing that argument within context that highlights its importance. Alternatively, we may choose to address your writing style. In this case, I will introduce you to a set of flexible guidelines developed at the University of Chicago by which you will learn to write text that is clear, direct, and readable. At every stage, we will jointly decide how to proceed.
To write well, you must not only study the principles of good writing but also apply those principles in practice. Therefore, we will spend much of our time working hands-on with current or recent samples of your writing. We will practice with these and use them to identify ways you can improve. Also, between lessons, I may ask you to do small writing exercises that reinforce what you learn. This will speed your progress.
In the past several years, I have accumulated much experience as a writer and teacher. At Harvard College, I majored in Social Studies and East Asian Studies, graduating with honors in May 2011 and completing a senior thesis based on fieldwork in rural China. While at the College, I served as a Peer Tutor for its Bureau of Study Counsel and led an essay-writing seminar at the Harvard Summit for Young Leaders in China. I also worked as a consultant for the Cambridge Microfinance Initiative, teaching entrepreneurs to write professional business plans. During the same period, I helped several adults edit speeches and cover letters, and I coached several students as they successfully applied to universities such as Oxford. More recently - since early 2012 - I have served a variety of students as a professional writing tutor.
