Teaching is my true passion and I have over 18 years of tutoring experience. I love to see the light go on when the student understands what is being taught or explained. I have seen the light go on in my student's eyes plenty of times. I have home-schooled my three children for the past twelve years using an accredited curriculum.
After 12 years of home schooling, all three of my children have graduated from accredited universities. They are gainfully employed in their various career fields
I graduated with a degree in Journalism. I wrote two weekly columns for a newspaper, which was a very exciting experience. Writing for a newspaper taught me how important it is to write accurately so that everybody could understand my column. Spelling and writing in correct sentences are the most important parts of the newspapers.
I love to see students reading and writing interesting and creative stories because that tells me that their minds are expanding and always learning! My son hates school but, loves Loretta. She finds ways to make learning fun for my 12yr old. My son enjoys his lessons and doesn't even realize he is learning new things!!!
Loretta provides a positive learning environment for her students. She assesses their abilities and challenges to provide a structured plan. She makes learning fun.
My son is very happy with the tutoring help he received from Loretta H. During our first meeting she asked what his goals are and what areas he feels he needs to improve. Then they both worked on the feedback from his teacher and in just two sessions my son's grade improved significantly. Setting appointments with her was very easy, she responded by email and also provided her cell number to ensure there is a reliable communication. Tutoring sessions started and ended as scheduled.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have experience in writing curriculums for K-6 grades. I adapt my curriculum to fit the student's needs. I have effective methods for teaching the core subjects in math, English, phonics, history and reading. I was a substitute teacher for the k-6 grades after I successfully homeschooled my three children. I am very familiar with the skills needed to succeed at these grade levels.
Teaching children and adults Phonics is fundamental in opening the door to successful education. When I volunteered in the literacy program through a local library, I realized that my students were relying too heavily on pictures or hints to understand simple stories or directions. It was not until we ran into comprehension problems that I knew something was missing. My students knew very little about sounding out letters for decoding words.
I have taught many students how to decode words by learning to sound out each letter of the written word. My success in teaching phonics to children and adults is excellent. The student's comprehension of the written word gives confidence and satisfaction in their education.
Reading is a fundamental element to learning. I work with children in kindergarten through sixth grade. Phonics is a necessary component to the foundation of reading. Children understand at an early age how letters are sights for sounds. We build on this by providing the student with educational and fun tools to succeed in reading. Tools such as sight words to assist the child to familiarize with what the letters, sounds and words that are most commonly used in the English language. Learning to know the sounds of each letter is effective in helping the child to blend letter sounds together to form a word. After much practice and confidence, the child continues to sound out words in order to read simple sentences.
I spend as much time as necessary with the child to help him/her gain confidence in a step by step process. My goal is for the child to be confident and develop a love for reading.
I have worked in the classroom as a special needs aide. I worked one to one with children who had autism, cerebral palsy and ADD/ADHD. I am especially understanding and patient with children who have disabilities. I have cerebral palsy, and I know the difficulties they face. I am very creative in individualizing a learning environment for these children. I adapt lesson plans to their strengths and weaknesses. I am a positive role model as well as a patient tutor. All children, disabled or not, need a person who can be a good influence on them.
Study skills follow a student for the rest of his life. Establishing good habits early on, to be consistent with these habits and knowing that no assignment is insurmountable are key to study skills. The student must also learn to take short breaks while studying. Using a timer helps the student to stay on task. Exercise and small snacks help to rejuvenate the student's concentration
When I tutor a student, I observe the student's approach to a given subject. By doing this, I can quickly point out the student's attitude toward an assignment. If the student is not doing well in the subject, he is more likely to be unorganized when an assignment or test is due soon. I tell the student that even if he dislikes the assignment, there are ways to be successful. Instead of looking at what seems to be an impossible task, I help him to "dissect" the assignment. This manner will allow the student to accomplish small parts of the assignment one at a time.
Studying for a test is an ongoing process. Reading the questions at the end of a chapter before reading the chapter, helps the student to zero in on what the chapter is all about. Frequently looking at the questions while reading, I advise the student to highlight the text that refers to the question. By highlighting, the student is able quickly identify the main objective of the chapter. This in turn will make studying for the test easier.
A student of mine is starting a project for History. She is assigned the task of creating a "parade float". Before she began, I had her draw the float to visualize her concept in detail. After her drawing, we discussed what she needed to build the float and I asked her to find as much material in her home to avoid unnecessary purchases. Next, we made a shopping list. This helped her to stay on task in the store. Once everything needed for the creation of the float was ready, I helped her to "dissect" the project of building the float. She separated the materials into groups according to the building process.
What began as an daunting task, became manageable after we dissected project. She also had fun while creating a parade float that initially began as a single thought!
I use two programs for vocabulary, "Wordly Wise " and "180 Words to Know in (grade level)." Both programs are arranged in a five day format. Each lesson is concise, interesting and fun. Depending on the student, I give him/her index cards. The student writes the vocabulary word on the front and a short sentence using the vocabulary word in the correct context. Each lesson contains at least ten new words. Once the student masters the words, I will give a verbal or written test. The student has a sense of accomplishment once he/she has mastered and increased their vocabulary that will only continue to grow.
